Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Sep 24, 2013 4:55 pm Hi All I've been doing a bit of research both on this forum and wider on the net and have some specific questions. My wife and I are building starting next year (I'm doing the important research now) and I'm going to have instead of a sitting room, a home theatre room. It isn't big. It measures 3.9x3.7m - I may be able to shift a wall slightly but unlikely. What are my best options for putting in a decent, [economical], setup? I already have an Onkyo THX certified 7.1 receiver which I love and a pair of floor standing Dali Concept 6 speakers that are OK. I'll be running blu-ray, a mac mini home theatre pc running plex/XBMC and could not care less about 3D. Where do I go from here? I love the idea of mounting a projector on the ceiling and the wife talked about having an in-ceiling motorised screen which would make the room more multi-use but I think for budget a fixed screen on the wall may be best... if a projector is the way to go. Further, would it be smart to put the rear surround speakers in the ceiling to maximise usable space? Finally, It seems I can't get Dali Concept speakers anymore. Any recommendations to round out the system or should I start again and get a set of 5 or 7.1 speakers new for the room? sorry for so many questions ben Re: Advice needed - small home theatre room in new build 2Sep 27, 2013 2:00 pm Hey, we've been through the research as we are pretty much at lock up now, biggest bit of advice I can give you is consider how far you want to go with your theatre (lots of money can be spent here depending on your answer), by the sounds of it your looking to still keep it a little multi-purpose, if you go down the road of a multi-purpose room with a projector make sure you get the right projector as light control in the room is a big factor with how much you will enjoy the picture you get. Your lucky that your in the initial stages so I'd advise that while your building you research the items that aren't cost efficient to do once your house is built, look at the sound proofing and acoustic treatment of the room you plan to use as your theatre, it can be a drag when you have the room setup but can't use it due to disturbing neighbours or others in the house. At a minimum I'd look at making sure you have acoustic batts in the walls, then if you want more sound proofing look into thicker plaster(fyrchek, soundchek etc), resillent channels, doubles doors etc. Speaker layout (a room that size I'd stick with 5.1)and brands etc are a personal thing, i'd suggest you go listen to the speakers before you buy them and there is nothing wrong with mixing speaker brands, each speaker will sound different on different amps. Personally I'm not a fan of ceiling speakers for the rears as it changes the sound stage but it's an acceptable compromise in the small space you have, once again if your happy with how it sounds then it's right so yeah, do your research and i'd suggest spending your money up front on the structure of the room as opposed to the equipment that you can slowly build up once your house is finished. Good luck, I know it can be a confusing and long journey Re: Advice needed - small home theatre room in new build 3Oct 01, 2013 8:08 pm Quite sure our theatre room is around 4m x 4m and 110" wall mount screen is perfect. Need to just check if the throw of the projector will suit shorter distances and still look good. A few things we never thought of were: * Ducted heating vent was installed now sits just alongside where the projector mount goes so stays shut all the time or will blow hot air straight on to the projector and overheats. See if you can check on the plans location of the vent. * Power points to more places, we went with electric recliners and ran out of points. We also ran speaker cable to the alfresco and the amp is dual powered zones, so we don't need points outside. Definitely pre-cable with LAN, audio cable etc Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room. There is a hallway/entry that is never used, so was thinking this could be an option. Only… 0 4712 Can anyone recommend a good/affordable retaining wall and fence builder that I can get a quote from located in Sydney? 8 45828 Thankyou for your advice. We do have Caesar coming out and hopefully resolve the issue for us. 4 18754 |
