Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 04, 2008 7:42 pm Mr Walker,
Sir I hope all is well. Its been a while since I dropped by Dude, I was wondering if I may lean on you for a ounch of advice? We are just about to start building with Eden Brae Homes in Sydney. My other half has been VERY reasonable on the electrical side of things. Ive been allowed C-Bus control systems, Lighting Censors, Cat6 structured cabling, and even a 2.5x4MTR comms room in my design However, there is one thing missing... Home Entertainment. Even though we plan to combine the Rumpus with the Entertainment, our whole life is very digital and its amust to have access to Music, Photos and Video on demand. My theory is to use MCE extenders in the bedroom, ensuite and kitchen for access to shared media. What are your thoughts? Is there a better way? Perhaps a easy way to pump one video source to multiple destinations? Id love to keep all systems (extenders, VMCE etc) in the comms room IF POSSIBLE. Id definately like to add multi-room audio in at a later stage, however I havent made any provision yet what so ever. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Of course I would hire your services if you were not based in VIC! All the best, Matt Re: VMCE - Any need for AV cabling? 2May 05, 2008 12:44 pm Hi Matt.
While Mr. Walker runs a Dvico TVX-4130, I have a VMC PC in my theatre (and still like it), with plenty of movies and my entire CD collection on it. I do, however, also have a dedicated DVD player (Marantz), but that's because I had it before the VMC PC and I still believe I'm getting a slightly better result from it playing DVDs rather than the PC. You still need to get both audio and video signals from the VMC to where ever you want to be able to hear and see it (I can hear and see it in my theatre, and I can hear it in my outdoor area also - all of the audio and video being routed/decoded/switched/amplified/etc. by my A/V receiver of course). Re: VMCE - Any need for AV cabling? 3May 05, 2008 2:24 pm Thanks so much Rod
So do you think there is anything I need to worry about with laying cables in the house for potential multi-screen scenarios (eg: Same material playing in the kitchen as the rumpus), if Im laying Cat-6 everywhere? Re: VMCE - Any need for AV cabling? 4May 05, 2008 2:52 pm Hi Matt.
There are still many variables to deciding what cabling you might need: What displays do you want to have in what rooms? What types of input connections will they have available? Sound in same rooms? How do you want to control all of this? There are probably at least half a dozen other questions along these lines... some of which often only come to mind when standing there looking at where things are gunna go..... Re: VMCE - Any need for AV cabling? 5Jun 25, 2008 4:42 pm Thanx Rod
As you can see Im very quick with my responses! What Im looking at doing is putting all my crap in a room at one end of the house, where all the cables will be terminated and where the Amp/ Xbox/ MCE/ Home Server etc will reside. A comms room if you will! In the main rumpus Im hoping to have a slot loading DVD drive mounted in the wall and then run back to the main MCE via USB over Cat-6, similar to this one: http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg76 ... 010440.jpg taken from this MCE very influenced post: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=690644 From there I was thinking of having some HDMI outlets in most rooms (run over Cat-6 was the thought so Im not out dated the second HDMI gets revised again!) Then pump HDMI signals from the Media Centre system to the rooms using a HDMI splitter. Of course on top of that, I want 6.1 in at least one room, with stereo options in most others. I have no idea how Im going to do IR or change sources yet as I would like to be able to pump a MCE extender or Xbox to rooms too if possible. ITs all so confusing. Ive had a good look at the Gefen website, just not sure if all those adapters are the way to go. What do you think? Re: VMCE - Any need for AV cabling? 6Jun 25, 2008 8:07 pm Sounds like a plan.
Question: Is it a single or double storey place? Re: VMCE - Any need for AV cabling? 8Jun 26, 2008 11:45 am Matty!!!!
Seems like ROdda has this one under control... I will watch with interest. Re: VMCE - Any need for AV cabling? 9Jun 26, 2008 3:21 pm OK, well if the place is single storey then any cabling that doesn't get run now will still be able to be done at a later date (unless you are seriously unlucky an hit an obstacle or two). Perhaps drill holes in the noggins in any/every wall space where you think you might want to run cables.
For IR we use IR receivers/connecting blocks/IR emitters, and you can run phone wire or Cat5 runs between the receivers and the connecting block (we usually put the connecting block where the actual gear is). So you put the IR receivers in the rooms where you plan to splash around some IR (the number of receivers supported by a connecting block will be mentioned in it's literature - eg. some can support 4, some more). Regarding HDMI, be aware that long runs of HDMI (10m+) with wallplates (ie. you are then using a HDMI joiner and another HDMI cable to get to the end device) can get a little fickle, depending on the components involved... Re: VMCE - Any need for AV cabling? 11Jun 28, 2008 11:11 am OK, I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to when you say 'structured' cabling, as the term really just means to plan your wiring/cabling and get it in place while you build...
Again, regarding the Gefen devices, you'd need to narrow down what you're referring to there also. They, like many other manufacturers, make HDMI switches as well as repeaters, HDMI over Cat5 modules, etc... I think what you need to know is this - if you are planning on running HDMI lengths of 10m or more then try to ensure you use good quality, thicker, higher density cables (the longer cables should be thicker, higher density cables), and if you plan on then having joiners in those runs (wallplates are joiners) then you should consider something like this also: http://www.cablechick.com.au/cables/hig ... oster.html A question. Im in Queensland and building a new home. We managed to reach practical completion 6 weeks ago but we haven't heard any date for handover yet. Who should we… 0 3052 i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits. There's only one… 7 9685 I am looking at building a house. Has anyone used Construkt Homes (based in Adelaide)? Does anyone have experience with this builder? 0 5518 |
