Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 25, 2013 7:39 pm Hi, I am hoping someone could help me, we have been exploring the option of getting a projector with a screen for our family room. Of course the salesman is saying it would be fine in a family room and that you can still see the screen in daylight. But my understanding is that projectors are best suited in theatre rooms that are dark, not rooms where there is lots of light during the day and lights switched on at night . I am also concerned that the screen would be too big for the room, the room is 4.2 x 3.8m, the screen/TV would be on the wall that is 4.2 wide. The room is painted white and has a large window that is facing north, the window would be to the right of the screen. Can someone please advise if a projector with a 90" screen would work in this setup or are we better off with a large screen TV, probably around 65-75". Thanks in advance Re: Projector for family room? 2May 25, 2013 10:47 pm Hi Tweety, Never trust a salesperson What they are saying is true to a degree though. It depends a lot on the model. The Epson TW9100 is almost bright enough to be used in full daylight but depending on how the light comes to the screen (and the screen type used) it will look washed out. You don't need a "bat cave" but it is handy to be able to control the light. Based on the room dimensions you are looking at a good screen size (90" to 100") and depending on your budget you may find the large screen value outweighs the LED /LCD argument. ie. Size matters Have you had the opportunity to have the products you are looking at demonstrated in a light environment? Did you have a budget to work to (PM me if you prefer) ? Cheers, Matt Re: Projector for family room? 3May 25, 2013 11:28 pm Hi Matt, Thanks for your reply, looking washed out is what i was worried about. the projector is a Mitsubishi HC7900, the brochure that I have doesn't specify the type of screen it just says 2.7m. As for the price, it is for a complete home theatre system, fully installed, the components are : Mitsubishi HC7900 projector 2.7 m screen Yamaha Aventage 720 receiver Yamaha 473 bluray player Yamaha NS555 surround sound 5.1 channel speaker package Yamaha subwoofer Set to box Cables and brackets 4 3d glasses For $6990 What is your opinion on the projector and the package? Unfortunately the setup in the store was in a dark room, although they did turn the lights on I am not sure it was a true reflection of how it would look with direct light. Thanks for your help Tweety Re: Projector for family room? 4May 26, 2013 9:25 am It all depends on the lumens. how bright is the projector. We bought a acer projector(cheap one) and it had 3000 lumens. We used in a huge room with lots of light and some outside light. It was very very bright. Now having direct sunlight hit the screen well don't expect too much. The same goes for any plasma or lcd screen. You need to see how the room handles sunlight during the day and see if any direct sunlight hits your screen during your viewing times. I will be doing something similar when i get to build my house in a few months or so...
