After a 9 month disappointment with a builder we have changed builders and quickly approaching the pointy end of confirming a new builder.
Dimensions relevant are......
Block length....40m
House length...24m
The study is at the front of the house, we have a linen closet close to the middle of the house.
I doubt if WiFi signals would make it from the study to the alfresco / back yard from the study, as well as distance there are level changes with lots of concrete blocking line-of-site from front to back.
Option 1 is to put hubs / switches / routers / WiFi / NAS components in the study
Option 2 is to utilise the linen closet
As there are (semi) frequent requirements to re-boot various components, my preferred option would be to have everything in the study with just a wireless router in the linen closet.
Would it be better (from a networking point) to have everything centralised in the linen closet, even if it is some distance from the study ?
Are there any other (heavy-duty) WiFi points that I could have in the linen closet and just run a network cable from the study to this component with all the other gear in the study ?
What sort of physical area should I allow (in terms of width * height * depth) for the gear ?
Currently to make our home networking work I have ...........
1 * ADSL Modem
1 * 4 Port Netgear Swich
1 * 2 Port Generic Switch
1 * 4 port Wireless Router
1 * NAS (In study, used a lot)
1 * NAS (In boy-childs bedroom, not used at all, he says it's too loud !)
With the exception of the good NAS (and possibly the wireless router) I guess most, or all, of the gear will be redundant in the new build ?
Also, it appears that the Telstra point on the block is at the southern street corner while the electricity point is at the northern street corner. No doubt the builder will take the short option for the electric cables and put the meter box on the northern wall.
What are they likely to do with the Telstra point ?
While right now all there needs to be is a "standard" POTN connection for the 'phone, it'll be "reasonably" soon that our suburb will get NBN. How do I best prepare for this ?
Thanks,
