Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 22, 2012 2:55 am Hi all. I've just bought myself a big telly and now have the urge to get the big sound so I figure I'm going to need an AV receiver and speakers. Since the home theatre scene is new to me I've spent the last week clicking around trying to get up to speed with whats hot and whats not etc. It has become very apparent that I'm well and truly out of my depth and I need help in working out what I exactly need and then which brands and stores etc. I want to get some knowledge behind me before I hit the shops. If someone could point me in the direction of a post or website that lays it all out for beginners I'd be greatful. As I said I have a telly (64" Samsung) and I want a good sound. I'm not an audiophile and I probably have some degree of industrial deafness. I expect I'd be looking at a 5.1 setup with provisions to ramp it up to 7.1 or something else down the track. Now that is pretty much it. I don't know what else I need, I'm sure there are some must have features that I simply can't live with out but I don't know about them yet. I've got an open plan living area about 6m x12m (not exactly rectangular) with some double glazed windows stone fireplace and a tiled floor. The viewing area is about 5m from the wall with the telly. From what I've read on this forum I have decided on a budget of $3,000. About $1k for the receiver and $2k for the speakers. I haven't even thought about how much speaker wire and anything else will cost. Re: Home theatre for dummies 3Jul 27, 2012 2:52 am I went with Eastwood Hifi and ordered the whole thing over the phone. I took a punt and didn't listen to anything. My reasoning being I would not be able to find somewhere that would have a room setup like mine and therefore what I sampled wouldn't be what I got. I also figured that my ears might not be able to reasonably evaluate the different comparable systems especially if I sampled them in different shops on different days. Lastly the setup I was drawn to was about 900km from my house. The system: Front: Paradigm Monitor 9 Centre: Paradigm 3 Surround: Yamaha in ceiling IC 800 Sub: Paradigm (can't remember at moment) Receiver: Yamaha v871 I've installed the ceiling speakers and have run cable through the walls for the fronts. Still have to work out where to put the sub. I'm happy with result but I do need to recalibrate the receiver to the speaker positions and finish off some connections via bananas and wall plates. 3 5799 We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds.
