Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation Re: Wireless media streaming 2Apr 05, 2012 4:52 am I think I know what you're asking but I am an old girl so you will have to excuse my terminology. For Christmas my computer geek son brought me this black thingy and it is called Western Digital My Book Live. It is connected to the telly in the TV room along with a Lynksys wireless router. Most of my downloads are through utorrent and as soon as a download is finished it says 'moving' and automatically transfers to My Book Live. It is 1TB and currently has 360 movies, 450 old & new TV shows and has used up 390gb so it's not even half full. I intend to transfer about 10,000 music files to it when I get a chance. We can also watch movies, tv shows and listen to music from it in the family room at the back of the house as there is a Wi-Fi dongle plugged in to the back of that TV. Should have seen the old mans face when I asked him to buy a dongle while he was up the street getting the bread, technologically he would be happy to still be living in the 70's and driving around in his Sandman. Noone else had answered your post so I hope this has helped just a little and I haven't made a fool of myself. Regards, Grumbles Re: Wireless media streaming 3Apr 06, 2012 5:47 pm Unless distances are short, or you are not streaming HD, unfortunately wired is still the better choice, especially as you are likely to get interferences from neighbours. If you have to go WiFi, use 5Ghz as there are fewer users, and keep distances short. Re: Wireless media streaming 4Apr 06, 2012 9:49 pm I have used Tversity on my PC for many years to enable media streaming to my PS3. As it has only been used on the PS3 I am not sure how this will work with other devices. As for wireless, it does cause streaming to freeze and carry on so I just stick with wired. I hope this helps. Re: Wireless media streaming 5Apr 12, 2012 3:44 pm Don't do it - simple If it is for you, you will JUST get away with streaming SD (Standard Definition) TV and DVD quality movies - if you want to watch anything of 720p quality or above, you will be need a wired connection If your re-modelling for someone else, I wouldn't touch it as you will be delivering a sub par product to your customers. The buffering alone would be enough to send me mad!! You also will need to take into consideration the setup whomever this is for. Do they have a NAS? How much data will the be consuming? (by this i mean is watching a HD movie every couple of nights something they will be doing or is it for streaming the odd MP3) unfortunately it is not as open-ended or simple to design for as you may think Re: Wireless media streaming 6Apr 12, 2012 6:03 pm Try Intel WIDI. 13-08 Moved in 13-05 Build restart 13-04 VMIA compensation 12-08 Builder liquidation 12-03 Fixing 11-12 Lockup 11-11 Frame 11-09 Slab 11-09 Start 11-07 Contract 10-11 2K deposit 10-06 Titled land Re: Wireless media streaming 7May 11, 2012 12:06 pm Thanks everyone but here's the thing. I want to stream video directly from the internet. So......any Ideas Then you will need to have your device locally connected to the TV with wired connection to your home network (ie you will need an Ethernet point where you have your tv). You will not be able to stream HD (1080p) content over wireless. The bandwidth is simply not there. Apple TV doesn't play mkv files so it's a no no for me.
