Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Feb 29, 2012 5:39 pm Hi guys, Ive been doing some research on surround sound in a theatre. Ive heard that 7.1 suround sound is a waste of time since your players usually dont support this. The other thing is the speaker positioning. Ive been told that your speakers should be the same height all the way around the room. I was planning ot have to large stand speakers at the front and 2 smallish speakers on the upper part of my rear walls. What configuration have you guys gone for? And are you using 5.1? Home Theatre - Speaker placement 2Feb 29, 2012 9:19 pm Hi I wouldn't get too worried about precise speaker positions - most AV receivers come with auto set up microphones that will calibrate the timing to account for your speaker positions. Even if you did set them up precisely it would require you to sit in the precisely calibrated location. I have installed 7.1 as many modern DVDs and all Blu Ray discs include support for the extra surround channels, but 5.1 still sounds pretty good. I have had both and 7.1 is good, especially if you use Blu Ray. it provides more flexibility in listening. Placement wise, yes most systems can calibrate for odd speaker placement but why not research correct placement for 5.1 or 7.1 as it may not cost any more to get it approx right ciao Mark Re: Home Theatre - Speaker placement 5Feb 29, 2012 10:36 pm Yeah well that's what I thought. 5.1 will be easier to install on the back walls. If I cable for 7.1 then I will have wire hangs in the walls. My concern for the sound was that if your speakers are the same height as your front I'd think it would sound better. I think of it as which directions the sound come from. But note taken for calibration on the setup. My preference it up on the rear walls cause its neater, not really for sound ambience. But at the same time I want a sound system that will low you out of the water! Re: Home Theatre - Speaker placement 6Feb 29, 2012 11:32 pm Mount your sides and rears angled down. Some speakers are built that way to allow higher placement. Also for side and rear placements you can build columns and mount quite nicely. Do yourself a favour and check out some of the build threads on http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre ... light=show it will give you some ideas.... cheers mark Re: Home Theatre - Speaker placement 7Mar 01, 2012 8:51 am Barnseee Yeah well that's what I thought. 5.1 will be easier to install on the back walls.
