SO.... When are you going to buy a new PS3?????? Re: All over for HD-DVD 4Feb 20, 2008 1:14 pm Yeah, saw this yesterday.
I think it's excellent news, especially here in Aus where HD-DVD really didn't take off at all anyway. Those of us that own some DVD-Audio discs and Super Audio CDs know how much potential damage can be done by having 2 opposing formats splitting content producers and equipment manufacturers (many of them are unsure of which side to back and don't commit to producing much to either). At least if it's finalised where there is one mainstream format/platform (don't anyone pipe up about some new Chinese version that's 'gunna be better and crush both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD in Asia blah blah blah'...) then the uptake by both the content providers (movie studios) and manufacturers will be much fuller and near enough to 100% - hopefully like what happened with DVD. If this is finalised soon and the big players understand this soon then we will see more brands releasing Blu-Ray players (therefore more competition - better prices ?) and more titles being released due to more confidence to commit to the format from the movie studios etc. I've gone from being quite frustrated with the war to being quietly excited by what looks like it's end - and in a shorter timeframe than what I was anticipating a couple of months ago..... Very good news... Re: All over for HD-DVD 5Feb 20, 2008 2:39 pm Totally agree Rod.
Nothing worse than 2 conflicting vendors to slow a market down and stop others writing software or releasing media to suit it. Hmm memorier of VHS v BETA Windows & Macintosh war IBM Micro Channell versus PCI BUS etc etc It will always happen, but most companies are realising that consumers are more knowledge and device savy these days - so to get a standard moderated via a common industry ratification body who all decides is tending to happen. - Toshy got smart and did it on their own. Conflicting standards happens lots in my game, and they soon get sorted out due to ratifying bodies and user uptake etc. Steve A question. Im in Queensland and building a new home.
