Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 15, 2011 8:48 pm Hey guys, I'm wiring houses up for smart wiring and decided I need to check to see what other people are doing and using. Wanting to make sure im using the right technology and best products. So for starters I run all my Data/Phone/Coax to one location as usual. I just use an 8 port splitter from Lacey's tv for the coax for the tv points Any suggestions for what is best for more than 8 coax lines? the data terminates onto a patch panel and the patch leads go to the switch (was an Asus one for the most recent 8 port job) the phones i terminate all on a Krone block and jumper them together and then run a jumper wire to 1 patch panel port with is then linked to the dsl modem for connectivity. That's about all i run ATM. i want to get into running security as well as most other home automation. I also run most resi-linx products for infra-red as well as uRemote for universal remote control using iPhone, iPod, iPad. Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on anything else i should look into? Regards Chris Which way do you wire your house and what products? 2Dec 16, 2011 5:30 am Hi It would be a pretty large house that has more than 8 active points. For example I will have 11 points in my place (and it is a large dual occupancy) but I will probably only have 6 active points. The rest are for future-proofing. If you are going to have a lot of active antenna points then you probably need to start looking at MATV distribution amplifiers. With MATV you have to do the math and work out your desired signal level at each outlet, the input signal strength and then design the installation with the appropriate amplification and attenuation at the taps/splitters. Too much signal can be as bad as too little if you overload the input to the tv you will get clipping and distortion which leads to drop-outs on digital TV. For security cabling you typically use 4 and 6 core security cable (movement sensors, sirens) and fig 8 cable (door/window sensors). Be aware that all states require you to have a security installers license to sell and install home security systems. Which way do you wire your house and what products? 4Dec 21, 2011 7:57 pm Hi Installing surveillance cameras would still require you to hold a security license - you should check the requirements in your state or territory. For telephone distribution you can use something like the Clipsal 8052/4RJSMB but they are pretty expensive. Paul We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds. The quote above was purely for “pre-wiring” so the blinds company can install the motors and blinds.
