Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 04, 2011 12:14 am I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I seem to be good at those.. We have pre wiring for in ceiling speakers as part of our build, who do we get to install speakers once we are in? Can we do this ourself or is this something we need an electrician to do? Dumb question Re in ceiling speakers. 3Dec 04, 2011 6:16 pm Hi You can do it yourself if you are sufficiently handy. Lookout for the location of your roof trusses and make sure you have clearance before cutting your holes. The old adage holds true - measure twice, cut once. Most speakers should come with a template to mark the ceiling. I suggest drilling a small hole to start and then use a wallboard saw to cut the hole. You shouldn't need to worry about making the hole especially neat as the bezel around the speaker will conceal it. Paul Re: Dumb question Re in ceiling speakers. 4Dec 09, 2011 2:27 pm While you don't need to be a master tradesman to install these yourself it still does require a bit of care, and I only agree with the idea of 'not needing to be neat' to a degree - some in-ceiling speakers have smaller bezels/bezels/lips than others and may not be much thicker than 12-15mm, so if your hole widens by amounts approaching this on both sides you can then end up with a gap your speaker does not completely cover, so it is wise to actually stick to the template as much as you can. You also need to be sure (reasonably) where your starting point is so that the full size of the circle fits well within the boundaries of whatever woodwork is above the ceiling plaster (remember you need to make allowances for whatever mounting system/clamps the speakers use). Plus you need to also be aware of other things above the ceiling plaster like electrical wiring and other infrastructure... I have installed hundreds of pairs of in-ceiling speakers over the many years I've been doing this and yet I still come across challenging installs all the time. So if you are up to it (and have the right tools) then go for it. If you aren't sure then get someone experienced to do it. P.S. I live in Pakenham (well, Pakenham Upper now) and my rates are competitive Re: Dumb question Re in ceiling speakers. 5Dec 16, 2011 10:40 am Not a dumb question at all. Rodda is spot on with his advice as usual. I will add my 2c worth. Depending on where you are with your build try to take some photos of the ceiling without the plaster where you will be mounting the speakers ensuring you get some reference points in the image such as a window. The reason I am suggesting this is I am building a 2 story house and the area I wish to mount the speakers there are gas and water pipes running through the void between the ceiling and floor above. A trap for young players! The reference point give you the ability identify where the ceiling joists are and help avoid any mishaps. If you are building a single story house or are mounting the speakers on the upper story you have the advantage of being able to enter the ceiling space. Thanks for sharing. Looks good. The joiner has come back with a quote of close to 5k. I think we are going to not do it.
