Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Sep 09, 2011 2:22 am I have what I think is a basic question but having difficulties getting a concrete answer from a number of security alarm companies so thought the cablers/sparkies here would know better. Essentially looking for a new build, plan is to have broadband access, telephone access and alarm. Nothing fancy like stuctural wiring or automation at first. My questions are: - do I need 2 separate phone ports for ADSL and phone; - is this just split from the incoming telstra landline using a adsl splitter; - is the adsl splitter between the incoming line and the mode 3 connection for the alarm or is it after the mode 3 connection Re: ADSL and Alarm 2Sep 09, 2011 7:06 am Hi While you can use an ADSL filter at each phone point, it is much better to install a central filter/splitter. This does mean that you will have one phone port in your house which is for the ADSL and then one (or more) points that are for the phone, but these are split from the one incoming line. The splitter is between the incoming line and the mode 3 socket and becomes the first phone socket. This way the alarm can grab the phone line when it needs it without disrupting the ADSL connection. When you (or your builder) talks to Telstra about provisioning the lead-in inform them that you want an NTD (Network Terminating Device) installed. There is no extra cost, but if you don't specify it then the Telstra contractor may just install a connection box (I am not even sure if they still use these older boxes, but best to be safe and ask). An NTD allows the central filter to be installed directly in the box, while the connection box (Grey box that you see on the side of many houses) does not.
