infrared relays

Steve, Rod or anyone else with a clue :lol:

My hb has been reading the posts in this forum and is keen to prewire our HT using the infrared repeating technology so we can place all of the boxes away from view in the study.

We would like to put the xbox 360, computer, Yamaha receiver, dvd players & foxtel in the study to make it the central hub; and put the tv screens in the family room, main bedroom and upstairs.

Will wireless computer networking be ok going up to the second storey or is it adviseable to run data cables upstairs to support the network?

AND

What is the ballpark cost for a suitable infra red repeating system that will operate from the family room and main bedroom (both downstairs)?

We have a plan of our house on our blog if you need a visual.

Wireless computing should be fine for upstairs.
What is the upstairs floor made of - concrete is really bad at knocking the signal out. As is steel.

I'll leave the infrared stuff to the guys who play with that all the time.

thanks Steve for the prompt response. Its not concrete (unfortunately ... for thermal mass

) ... only particle board. There is some steel in the structure but only4 large main beams.

I wont go into the pro's and cons but for the cost of CAT5E it just isnt worth it not to cable.

A good I/R kit with 2 receivers and a powered hub capable of running 5 - devices will set you back around $500.

This requires pre wiring too.

Your hubby is right not to ask...its like asking for directions...you just dont do it!

On a PC or other data system related basis.?

I am sure we have had this conversation before...

I think there is a place for wireless but with so many devices that share the 2.4ghz spectrum it is getting too easy to slow down networks and cause drop outs etc in high residential area's.

I use wireless on 3 laptops in my home but I have all the main PC's hardwired.

I am of the thought that if you can wire it ... do so.

The cost is negligible and the result is 100% all the time.

Also it is (generally) much easier for the newbie to setup a hardwired connection than wireless. IMO

But agree with the too hard for a newbie to setup a secure wireless lan.
And if not done properly can cost lots of dollars in excess internet charges if someone uses your wlan to get to the internet.

As for interference - yeah it can be an issue sometimes.
