Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Aug 12, 2011 12:01 pm We're building at the moment and the contractors that connect our phone line have an NBN ready package which they are pushing for $800, and I'm not sure if they're using the fear of costs to come to get people in to taking this package up. They say it includes: 1 phone point, 1 data point, 1 communications cabinet "House will be NBN ready" Now apparently it doesn't include a power point in the comms. cabinet that will be needed to power the NBN box. We need to arrange for that. Additional network points are $77, and are done with Cat6 cable. They are saying that when the NBN is rolled out, NBN will run their fibre from the street to the easiest place in your house, which is going to be your garage. There comms. box will go in the garage, and then you choose where your phone and data points go. Would I not be better off having them run their standard line in for $165, and having a network point in the garage, so that when NBN come along, I can just plug the NBN box in to that point, and that make the rest of the network points 'live'. I know this message is kind of all over the shop, but there seems to be so much conflicting information out there, and my understanding of networking is limited. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Would be greatly appreciated! I've put a patch panel and all cables to a central point in the middle of the house.I assume I might need to pay a bit more to get the NBN from the front of the house to the middle but the other cable runs are shorter now. The NBN might never come to your house given the election cycle. Re: NBN ready - is this a rip off? 3Aug 12, 2011 1:01 pm I would think that the NBN would put these in anyway. I think they are making an assumption on what the requirements are. In simple dont do it. NBN would have something in place, or included it when you join up. How many people do you think will connect if they have to pay $800 first. Re: NBN ready - is this a rip off? 4Aug 12, 2011 1:40 pm We just chose a similar package for our new place. Just plug a router into the 1 data point and share the net through out the house. The nbn website has a lot of info on what normal people will get http://lindeman28.blogspot.com - Our building blog Re: NBN ready - is this a rip off? 5Aug 12, 2011 3:48 pm Quote: the contractors that connect our phone line have an NBN ready package which they are pushing for $800, They say it includes: 1 phone point, 1 data point, 1 communications cabinet "House will be NBN ready" Does $800 include trench from boundary to the house ? They require an open trench, so it's going in when the plumbing/drainage is. The contractor said they had a meeting with NBN on Tuesday night and that's when they were told that when the NBN contractors come down the street they will install to the garage or nearest point and then fix the power supply and NBN box to the wall. They said they can do it without the cabinet for $500ish. Thanks for your help, I was just out of my depth as far as working out if the price was reasonable. That seems like quite a lot of money for not much. * The builder will need to dig the trench anyway for your phone line. * Even at builder's prices it shouldn't cost more than $150 for a power point (and I can't see any reason for it to be on its own circuit) * I haven't priced the bends, but straight conduit is about $6 per length. The bends shouldn't be more than $30 each * They have included two Cat 6 runs, but where is the other end? If I were you I would decline this option. If the fuse box is on the side of your garage, get them to install an additional power point on the inside wall near the fuse box and the NBN can use that. While I am hoping the NBN will happen, nothing is certain. If you do get the NBN connected, it will be free if you take it up when they are rolling out your area. They may thank you for providing conduit, but it won't cost you any less The conduit might be a good idea if you are going to have a lot of concrete that might make it difficult to run the fibre in the future. Paul Re: NBN ready - is this a rip off? 13Aug 16, 2011 9:58 am It is a bit much but I'd rather them do the main stuff then I'll add additional points around the house. I'd rather pay extra and have it all done ready for when im in. Our estate manager has advised nbn is scheduled to be installed around the end of the year and our house won't be finished till around march next year.
