Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Aug 03, 2011 11:14 am Hi all At the moment, I am planning to do the data wiring myself and terminate the points in the laundry. I am planning on getting a cabinet ( a normal wooden one) which will house my ADSL router, Switch and NAS. Would it be an issue in terms of humidity considering I will have my washing machine there? I am not planning on having a dryer. What do you think? Cheers Re: Data Termination in Laundry..Is this a wise idea?? 2Aug 03, 2011 11:33 am I think if you were a certified cabler you would know that dry and cool is the best place for data termination. Unless it's one of those fancy steam washing machines then there should be no increase in humidity. You also have to think long term and circumtances could change that all of a sudden you need a dryer that vents that happens to vent into the room. That said, what are the specs of your equipment relating to operating conditions, temperatures, humidity etc? You shouldn't have any real increase in humidity with just a washer, but even though you are not planning on a dryer currently, it may become a necessity for you in the future, so don't discount it totally. When you say a wooden cabinet, do you just mean like a broom closet? You will need to think about cooling, dust and airflow for your equipment if it is to be houeed in an enclosed space such as a cupboard. Re: Data Termination in Laundry..Is this a wise idea?? 4Aug 03, 2011 11:59 am Thanks guys. @joannapaulp, at this stage, I dont really have any details about the gear i will be using there. Although it will just be a basic one. nothing too high end. In terms of cooling, dust and airflow, I couldnt really think of any other suitable location. I dont want to tie up any room specifically as a study room. My other option would be linen cupboard. Although it can get warm (and cold depending on climate) a standard ADSL modem/router will be fine. Things like servers/network storage units are probably better off in the house somewhere - perhaps in the walk-in-wardrobe. Depending on how many points you are getting you can probably get away with a small wall-mount cabinet (Say 4RU - http://www.dataworldit.com.au/index.php?action=product&id=88 ). You can also look at things like Clipsal Star-Serve. The advantage of these systems is that they fit in the wall cavity with a flush mount door, so you could mount it in the wall of the walk-in robe, for example. The disadvantage is that they are relatively expensive. And just to re-iterate what others have said, legally you can't do this yourself unless you have an open cabling registration Paul Re: Data Termination in Laundry..Is this a wise idea?? 7Aug 03, 2011 8:35 pm Thanks all. I guess it will have to be the WIR then. Lucky I got a spare Telephone point and Power Point there. PS. I just realized, I should have been more specific. When I said I will do it myself, I meant to say 'not thro' the builder'. The post was confusing . Thanks for the feedback guys Cheers Data Termination in Laundry..Is this a wise idea?? 8Aug 03, 2011 9:08 pm Hi Rajan_g4 WIR does look the spot for you. We have a 2 storey and I have ours in the under stair void. Why not go the whole hog and get a proper network cabinet also. I bought all my gear from a place in Sydney called 4cabling and I can highly recommend them not only for customer service, but price too.
