Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 04, 2011 9:27 pm Hi All, I am currently looking at purchasing a 3D TV, however I have just been informed that I need to upgrade my DVD player to a Blue Ray 3D player and also upgrade my amp to one with a HDMI input, I understand that my DVD player will require upgraqding but can't see why my amp would require upgrading, Now my amp does not have HDMI input but does have the optical input, will this be sufficient or is the upgrade of the amp a must aswell Cheers Darren Re: Advice for 3D TV 2Jun 05, 2011 12:46 am Hi Darren, To play 3D movies, you'll definitely have to go to a 3D Bluray player. The amp would make life easy but it's not absolutely essential if you want to get started. You would connect the 3D Bluray to your 3D TV directly using the HDMI connection. Make sure you get a HDMI 1.4 cable, that's the version of HDMI that can carry the 3D stuff and that's also why that cable may be more expensive than some of the standard HDMI cables. Then you would use the Audio out connection of the TV into one of the inputs of your standard Amp. If your TV has the optical Audio output then connect that to one of the optical inputs on the amp and use that for sound only. Later on, if you want to get a new AV receiver, again make sure it accepts HDMI 1.4 to pass 3D through it. You will need HDMI. S/PDIF (the spec for digital coaxial and optical audio transmission cables) can do: Dolby Digital 5.1 DTS 5.1 Dolby Digital EX 6.1 DTS-ES 6.1 However if you want to do HD Audio or 7.1 then you need HDMI: Any 7.1 channel Dolby Digital Plus / TrueHD DTS HD / HD MA The limitation isn't the cables though (like the whole optical speed-of-light thing), it's actually a limitation of the S/PDIF spec.
