Riddle me this...
We're looking at having a security system installed in our new place. Whether we choose to have it monitored or not, the companies we've had supplying quotes all recommend that a central filter is installed.
I'm not a complete technological novice, but telephony isn't my strong suite. I'd just like to know why Security companies want to charge between $100 and $250 for this "central splitter", and also what exactly it does that is so special. I assume it just separates DSL, Telephone and Security signals...so a three way split rather than a two way split that your average DSL splitter/filter does.
I also read on the internets (and the internets are never wrong), that some guy just put your run o' the mill DSL filter at each phone point and he was able to get DSL, Telephony and Security all working without running into each other. I'm skeptical, though it'd be infinitely cheaper to use one of the several thousand filters in my posession rather than pay for one of these "central" numbers.
