Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 19, 2011 11:26 am Ok so could somebody pleeease give me a straight forward easy to understand answer to this question, I have researched the crap out of it and am still confused.. We will have a TV in the rumpus room, one in the lounge, one in the hometheatre and one in the master bedroom. We will have two foxtel boxes, what is the easiest, cheapest way to split each of those boxes between two rooms? (I understand which ever room the picture is split to will have to watch the same channel) How much is this likely to cost, who can I get to do it, when in the build is the most convenient to do this and will you be able to change channel from each room? Thanks She's backkkkk... Re: Splitting Foxtel between rooms 2May 19, 2011 12:24 pm Sharee.... I can't answer your question, but Bel (Haywgl) got something like this set up at her house. Maybe shoot her a PM and she could help you out? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Splitting Foxtel between rooms 3May 19, 2011 2:54 pm Hi One of the cheapest ways is to use a wireless sender (like this) but the quality can vary depending on distance and the construction of the house. There are also devices that will send the video over Cat-5 cable in the walls. This is one. This doesn't have IR remote control facilities, but only needs a single cat-5 cable which you would get installed before the gyprock goes up. The downside of both of these is that the quality is not going to be great - in particular they won't support the new Foxtel HD channels. I use the Cat5TX and Cat5RX from CE-Labs. They are more expensive but each transmitter supports two receivers plus IR return from the remote room. It can send digital audio so that you can have a surround sound system in the remote room and because it supports component video it will let you view HD channels. For this system you need 2 x Cat-5 cables from the transmitter to each receiver (so 8 cables for 4 rooms). The transmitter also has loop out sockets for a local TV. I bought mine on Amazon.com, and with the high $A it isn't too expensive. You can probably also find equivalent systems on eBay. Your electrician or other registered cabler should be able to install the Cat-5 cable for you. Paul Re: Splitting Foxtel between rooms 4May 19, 2011 7:17 pm Just purchase 2x foxtel extenders and connect with quad shield cable that way you get 2 remotes as well. Re: Splitting Foxtel between rooms 5May 19, 2011 7:46 pm Hi I don't think that they sell the Foxtel extenders any more at least they aren't on the Foxtel accessory page. I think this is because they aren't compatible with the IQ/IQ2. Paul Re: Splitting Foxtel between rooms 6May 19, 2011 8:37 pm Hi I haven't got foxtell but I wNted to achieve the same thing with my TiVo and topfield. I ended up using this http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.as ... rm=KEYWORD I actually bought two. I have cat5 going from the lounge to the bedroom and another lot of cat5 going from the lounge to the family room. I have a receiver in the bedroom and family room. I am using the one transmitter and swapping it between the family room port and bed port as needed which isn't that often (don't need at the same time). It means that the kids can watch either the TiVo, topfield or DVD player (av switch) which are in the lounge in the family room (new room in the house). I was going to put the toppy in there but now I can keep them all together. I also bought a harmony 300 for use in the family roo ( will prob get one for the bedroom as well). Hubby will never work out the remote but my 7yr old had it sussed straight away! If someone is using the the TiVo or tippy in another room lounge room person just uses tvs tuner or the device no being watched ie toppy or TiVo Cheers Donna Re: Splitting Foxtel between rooms 8Nov 04, 2011 11:08 pm Ive read all this but still confused, my situation is slightly different, We have a wall mounted TV and didnt want any boxes on that wall so our austar box is on the wall behind that room that happens to be the garage, we know we need a 3 rca cable to connect the austar to the TV but what do i need to so i can sit in the lounge room and change the channels on the box in the garage? Hi Something like this - http://www.thecableconnection.com.au/Infra-Red-starter-kit---Suitable-for-FOXTEL.html will do the trick. The rectangular receiver goes on the front of your TV. The power supply and connecting block go in the garage. The emitter sticks on to the front of the Austar box and away you go.
