How big a screen can we get???

I'm sure there's a mathematical calculation somewhere for this, but if we have a theatre room that is 4190 wide x 5800 long, how big can our screen be???

We checked out some theatre setups today and we were told not to go over 110" :evil:

If we wanted to have 2 rows of seating and the back row on a raised platform, can we go bigger or it 110" it???

Can the experts please advise????

Plus listenedd to the Paradigm monitor 11's too. :evil:

Ash, no he just shakes his head..... he has learned the way of the wise husband..... :wink:

We'll see what i can wangle in time.

I have to say though, i hate it when the sales people direct the initial sale at the guy in these instances.... Hubby hardly said 10 words in the hour and a half that we were in the showroom...This theatre will be my baby. He knows that full well...

He knows that i will choose well and he's happy to sit in it and just enjoy when it's all set up....

See wise husband hey???? And i didn't have to wave my stick at him once...yet..... :wink:

Let me guess - BPP?

In a room the size of yours you could easily go with a 120" screen, however, having 2 rows of seats means that the front row will be a lot closer to the screen than the >5m range and therefore 120" really could feel a bit too big for viewers in the front row which may only be about 4m from the screen or less.

One way of looking at it (the way I often like to), you give the % of consideration to the viewers (front row or back row) in proportion with the % of time those viewers will be viewing. In other words, if you are going to be watching the screen from your favourite seat(s) in the front row 95% of the time, then only 5% of your overall consideration needs to go towards how it will look (and sound) from the back row. Why cater as much to seats that will hardly ever get used (in comparison) if it will have too much of a detrimental effect on the experience from your own oft-used seats?
If you will always be watching from the back row, and 120" looks great from there, but it feels like it's a bit big to watch from the front row, does that really matter if there will hardly ever be people watching from the front row? (who are you building the room for?).

In the end, it is up to you as to how much you want to cater the experience for each row.

It may also end up that 110" is a good size after all (the one you saw with us that day was 110").

How did you know... we were looking at LCD and projection....they couldn't show me Transformers in HD only on 60" LCD :evil:

and i didn't really like the sound set-up anyway... Not enough bass!!!!....

I like to FEEL the bass, not just hear it when it comes to watching my movies.... Is that silly???? :lol:

Rod, is there only 110" then up to 120". Is 115" a standard size??? or am i being difficult???

I think you'd know that i'd be in the middle front seat - will have to make a reserved for mum cushion there i think :wink:

One or both of the kids would be relegated to the back seats, alternatively they like to camp out on bean bags on the floor so not sure where they will eventually end up....

We are still out looking hopefully again this weekend at set ups....
I also have the component details of what we currently have to use as a base for the HT so let me know when you guys are free and we'll chat....

The Screen Technics CinemaSnap (Fixed Frame) 16:9 screens come in 100", 110", 115" and then 125" in their standard sizes (as well as other standard sizes both above and below this range, but I don't think they offer a 120" 16:9 in a Fixed Frame screen).

The screen pictured in 'Joe's' theatre (those pictures we posted a little while ago of that awesome theatre with the ornate columns on the walls, the gold-leaf edged ceiling feature and the crimson cinema carpet, etc.) is a 115" CinemaSnap.

The ElectriCinema (still Screen Technics) premium motorised screens come in 100", 110", 115" and 120", then jump to 130" (as well as other standard sizes both above and below this range).

I have a 115" ElectriCinema. Matt had a 120" ElectriCinema (now he has that 135" CinemaSnap!!!! :cry:

).

As far as bass goes, just make sure you have a decent sub. Your room is slightly larger than the average size offered in a projcet home these days (as is mine

being 4.7m x 5.8m, not including the 700mm deep alcove my rear-pro TV sits well inside), and if you want decent thump I'd say you'd want a sub with no less than a 10" driver and 150W RMS of power (minimum 200W RMS would be even better

).

The bigger the driver, the more easily it will be able to produce lower notes. The more powerful the amp, the more energy it will be able to send that driver to make it move (in and out) and keep it under control when being loaded up. You want a sub that goes deep as well as loud, and (here's where the quality $ comes in) does it all with the tightest control over the driver and the sound it produces. When describing good subs audio reviewers use terms like "tight" and "fast", as well as "deep".

Cheap subs are the equivalent of an amplified wobble-board. They might make a loud noise but it really just sounds like someone who had way too many baked beans for lunch...

Okay well here's where the fun starts....
Rod, we have a Yamaha YST-SW500 sub (an oldie but hopefully a goodie)
It has active servo technology with an air woofer - Helmholtz resonator

It has a 25cm (10") cone woofer (JA2540) magnetic-shield type
Amp Output- 120W/5 ohms (THS 0.1%, 100Hz)
High Cut Filter - 10H-140Hz (-24dB/oct.)
Freq. Resp. 20Hz-160Hz (-10dB)

If has worked for us very well up to now, but if it eventually needs replacing well we'll see how it goes....

What are your thoughts???

If you want decent bass you’ll need to invest some dollars IMO. A good place to visit would be Deep Hz; they have a good range of quality subs!

Things that can never be too big:

Screens

(why not replicate that stretched neck front row of the cinema experience at home!!)
Beds :lol:

(damm space hogging other half!)
Chocolate Bars (yay)
Speakers (except when some moron is doof doofing in their car with fluffy dice and neon lights!)
Air Conditioners :lol:

Showers (hmmmm space!)
Spas (just need enough very close friends to fill it!)
Ovens....(cause sometimes I want to cook lots of stuff at once!)
..........how bored am I? First day back at work................ :shock:

Most of those specs look good, with the exception of it's amplifier's power output which does suggest it may run out of steam (and clarity, really) when you decide you really wanna get loud and have the sub shake the room (120W RMS into 5 Ohm is not tons).

That said, it does have a saving factor that may make up for this shortcoming - the YST factor (what their boffins call their 'Active Servo blah blah' and 'Negative Impedence blah blah' technologies). This is the technology that Yamaha purchased from Audio Pro which allows smaller drivers in smaller enclosures produce deeper notes than their size(s) would normally allow. (Guess who has an Audio Pro subwoofer

)

Best/easiest thing to do is include your current sub in your new setup and if you find you want more from it than it's willing to give then you have an easy option of shopping for another one then.

Also if Matt has the 130" is that then "oversized" for his size room?
Not saying that big is not better, but if we can get away with a 120" then i'm fine with that... but would like to see one first....

I had a girlfriend many years ago. She LOVED to dance!

She was only about 5'2". At live gigs, she would go right up the front of the stage, and dance almost inside the large floor-standing speakers. She loved to feel the music. Bit hard to hold a conversation with her though! :roll:
