Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 05, 2011 8:06 pm Just wondering, I'm putting together a media room and my builder has included a bulkhead and small alcove. You can see the plans from the link in my sig. Just curious, what do most recommend in regards to this alcove, he has it at 210 x 240 as the peirs with the bulkhead obviously coming out 210mm. Why I was wondering, if I should make it larger for when I end up putting my audio equipment somewhere and DVD storage etc. I've seen many display homes with cupboard filling the alcove below. Are these custom made? What would be best in terms of width and length perhaps - or should I just remove the bulkhead or remove the wall peirs and not alcove it so to speak? I was thinking it was a good idea, I could run some downlights above the TV, run a curtain and perhaps later run a motorised screen that comes down in front. Any pro's able to help? With how this space might be best used? And look nice also. Currently just have your standard home theatre system, all floor stuff. I'm looking to perhaps ready the room so I can put speakers in the ceiling etc later. Living in Sydney, if anyone can recommend anyone to talk to let me know. MANY people make the mistake of putting in a bulkhead or alcove and put their screen inside it. It's a nice looking feature when you are not watching anything but as soon as you turn on your large TV or Projector it's a huge issue. You are sitting there with the lights off watching a movie and all you will see a very bright and very anoying halo of light reflecting on the 3 inner surfaces of the bulkhead. Constantly flashing and changing. It didn't have an alcove but I wanted to hide the drop-down screen, so I added a bulkhead across the width of the room. The wall at this end of the room was painted a deep red (Dulux Murray Red) and I painted the bulkhead the same colour. With the lights off the wall and bulkhead appeared black and I had no problem with reflected light. The ceiling was white. Paul Re: Building a Media Room - Should I put in Alcove and Bulkh 4Mar 07, 2011 9:44 am Thanks Paul - I've decided to leave it for that very reason. I plan to elave the alcove pillars small but the bulkhead 300 wide. This allows me to fit a screen in it later if I go down that track. I found a home entertainment place near me on the weekend. I plan to go ask them about the room prior to building to make it ready for that eventual upgrade. Thanks for the feedback. Like the sound of that red too, exactly what I'm after. Will it be big enough to accommodate the screen I want to have? 2. Where are my front speakers going to be? (inside the alcove? enough room for them plus the screen? Free-standing or In-wall speakers (including centre)? - remember an In-wall centre will need to ensure no stud in the middle of the wall). Re: Building a Media Room - Should I put in Alcove and Bulkh 6Mar 07, 2011 10:38 am Thanks Rodda - what do you think? the room is 4000mm wide with the bulkhead and pillars 300 wide at the one end were the TV will be. This leaves clear space of 3400 across. The length of the room is 4300. I plan to use the room for playing games with the surround sound and watching movies. In that case a nice TV large TV should do it, or should I opt to go with a projecter and drop down screen for when watching movies and have the TV behind it? I've never had a projector so not sure how good they are personally. Obviously they are bigger so that seems like a plus. I wouldn't mind that set up to be honest. Also what's a good height for the centre speaker in your opinion. I'll make sure there are no noggings in the wall. For getting the real cinema experience you simply cannot beat a projector (unless you have about $100K spare and you can get your hands on a 100" plasma....), and the quality of the picture you get from them, as long as you have control of the amount of light that splashes around the room, IMHO is as good as plasma/LCD. If you want to go with a flat panel TV for regular TV viewing + a projection system for the big cinema experience I say go for it! I've installed many installations like that, and that way you get the best of both worlds (and these days could do it for a little over $3K if you were really conservative...). I suggest a 16:9 screen no bigger than 110" (and if you are not going to be sitting right against the back wall then perhaps go with 100"), and a 110" motorised has a maximum width of 2715mm (that is the over-all width of it's canister, and given that the steel rod across the bottom is not much less in length it is perhaps less confusing if you just stick with that one measurement) which easily fits in your available width. The centre speaker should be just below the screen (I'm not into micro-perforated screens with speakers behind them - I think it has a negative impact on the performance of both) with a small gap between them (so it doesn't look like you miscalculated/misplaced either of them). Consider how high your AV cabinet will be, then allow for the heights of both the centre speaker and the screen (screen (if it's a motorised): canister + image height + top (adjustable) and bottom border). You should research which speakers you like the 1. Sound of, and 2. Price of, then get the specs/measurements. For example you might need to leave (allowing for some margin around it) up to 68cm in width and/or 27cm in height depending on what you finally decide on. 0 9795 Iβm loving the potential versatility and practicality of a bench seat in a shower. Anyone had one of these done recently? Not sure if they are straight forward and easy… 0 747 I've decided, after a period of confusion (my building broker told me it's probably not worth it to use a lawyer, but others have said it is a must) that I definitely will… 7 27906 |
