Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 04, 2011 8:28 am Hi We are wanting to install a video intercom system either at the front gate or next to the front door. Excuse my ignorance.......Can anyone tell me if today's systems require electricity or if there are wireless intercoms available that run on batteries? If so is there much price difference between the two types of systems And, is it best to get it installed whilst building or is retro fitting ok? Many thanks K Re: Security Camera and phone 2Mar 04, 2011 12:35 pm Hi KAN, Most good systems run 4 small wires between the sender (the camera) and the receiver (the video display). There are wireless / battery powered units but the maintenance etc is a bit higher and the resolution and quality tends to be lower. A good system will set you back around $300 - $700 either way I think. If you are not sure which way to go I would personally be running 2 cables (one to the front door and one to the front of the house at an exit point that can be connected to after the landscaping is done) for later connection. You could use a four core cable but to be safe (and for flexibility) I would use a Cat5/6 ethernet cable. Hope that helps!
