Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 18, 2007 2:56 pm Guys - just thinking out loud here...
Suppose I built my house, and later decided to add a free standing home theatre room (i.e. shed on steroids). What would be the ideal building materials for this room? Standard bricks and plaster (like a BV house) with special material in the walls? Double bricks with just air between them? Special type of wood? Thanks, Paul After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Brick Veneer/plaster is fine. Definitely get some good insulation in those walls - some R2.5 batts for starters. For acoustic performance inside the room I reckon you really should look at putting heavy curtains around all of the walls (except where the screen is, depending on the screen) to stop most of the sound reflections, or perhaps some acoustic tiles - maybe even on the ceiling. Carpet the floor. Carpet the floor. Make sure you can control the light coming into the room - heavy curtains are a start but you can still have light leak from the edges. Roller shutters are quite effective. And, make sure it's big enough. If you're gunna go to the trouble of building a separate structure then get everything that can't be changed later right. I'd say the theatre room itself needs to be a minimum of 5m wide by 6m long, and if you're thinking about 2 rows of seats then minimum 8m long. Also if you're going to do 2 rows of seats and therefore putting the back row on a raised section then make that section at least 10" or 25cm high, and perhaps go to 12" or 30cm. And, if you're gunna do that then think about the ceiling height - if you have standard 8' ceilings and raise a section by 1' then that area will get pretty tight height wise. Might want to go with a minimum 9' ceiling if your doing a raised section. That's a fantastic result! Happy you got it sorted out. cheers Simeon 6 8642 in the stormwater pit or the drain? Those dont look like theyd fit in the drain. Separately, the pits do get stuff in them during the course of the build.
