I have a set of main/front speakers with specs of 20W to 150W
8 ohm, 35Hz - 22 KHz, 88dB.
Do I need to match these specs with the center i.e be exactly the same ?
or can i get away with a variance in any of the areas ie watts

As your answers suggest it is a very ambiguous subject this reproduction of sound subject and I guess people can spend far too much of their time and money trying to tweak their systems to achieve a "better sound" .
