Before figuring out what hardware to get, you should first really think about what you want to do with it. ie do you mainly watch blu rays, dvds, downloads, streaming vids off the net etc etc. For my solution, I'm mainly using a PS3 in my HT - does gaming, bluray, dvd, streaming vids off my pc etc, playtv DVR etc, and sometimes a toshiba hd-dvd. Had an xbox360 - I don't recommend it at all as it fails hard compared to the PS3. In the family room, mainly a WDTV live to stream stuff off my pc and also youtube etc. It's only $100 or so. Also got an old dvd player for when the need for physical media strikes. I think it is more versatile and more stable than a lot of the PC industry spawned PVRs (like the DVico TVX stuff, WDTV and other similar devices), but it does cost more and will almost certainly take up more space. Having said that I also run a PS3 in the same room for blu-ray viewing (and gaming, of course ). I know both of the above devices have functions that overlap, but I enjoy having both boxes and keeping their functions reasonably separate. Re: home theatre pc 4Feb 10, 2011 9:56 am Personally anyting less then an i3 and you are wasting money.. (new that is) and for the "size" of that compared to what the actual cost here would be.. a real HTPC (even made out of second hand parts would come in cheaper..... Windows 7 was a great step up. I'm impressed with the size of the HTPC in the OP's link. And with components that small you get the added benefit of smaller power requirements. Anyone know if you can set up a PS3 to display dvd covers when browsing media files? With the amount of overlap between smart TVs, consoles and other net enabled devices, the HTPC is going even further into a very niche segment. It always was but it seemed for a short while, it was emerging into the mainstream with devices like the one linked. Re: home theatre pc 7Feb 10, 2011 3:14 pm Rodda I think it is more versatile and more stable than a lot of the PC industry spawned PVRs (like the DVico TVX stuff, WDTV and other similar devices), but it does cost more and will almost certainly take up more space. I have been building media PC's for about 6 or 7 years now and things have changed HEAPS. Win7 is the way to go for sure. Just download "Media Browser" plugin and a couple more and you have a system that will far out perform ANY off the shelf solution. I do have to disagree about the size and the cost though. You can buy something like an ASrock ION-330 system. This PC is tiny and almost silent. It's not too much bigger than an Apple Mac-Mini. The cost of the complete system with 1tb HD, twin tuners, Blu-Ray drive etc.... can be had for under $1000.
