Mark Re: Blacking out windows.. 2Jan 07, 2011 7:16 am Apart from contact on the windows, we have used Al-foil taped to the windows when we had lighter curtains, this completely blacks out a room - my partner is a night shift worker & learnt this trick working in the mines. Although it doesn't look that attractive from the outside & can be covered with curtains so you don't see it on the inside. Have you considered window shutters? As we knew it was going to be a dedicated HT room we only had small windows put in. We then hung movie theme canvas prints over the windows. It blocks alot of light surprisingly and makes a real feature in the room. They look like light boxes. It is plenty dark enough in there to watch a movie during daylight hours. Should also add that these are north facing windows. To my understanding they go totally black when completely shut, can be opened whenever you want normal daylight coming in, and at least look like a proper addition to the house. Re: Blacking out windows.. 6Jan 07, 2011 4:15 pm I work a lot of shift work and blackening the windows out to sleep during the day is a must. However we just do the cheapy. A black bin bag taped up to the window, then cover that with a blind or curtains so you can't see it. At least this way it isn't permanent. If you want to use the room for something else later on it will take you 5 minutes to remove it. There are also heat reflective foils available that stick on the window. These are a bit harder to remove though. I haven't used or seen any coverings that are aesthically pleasing. Although I am sure there are many on the market. Re: Blacking out windows.. 7Jan 07, 2011 4:27 pm Well-fitting recess mounted roller blinds could work, especially if you fit window trims that extend over the recess a little bit (in front of the blind). The window trims would then block the light that comes in at the edges of the window. To be really sure you could add heavy blockout curtains over the top of that. Or, blockout curtains with linings that cover the entire wall? 4 14131 Unless there is something in special conditions the builder does not have to give you timeline.
