Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 22Feb 28, 2011 2:17 pm Minimum is 2 but I ALWAYS recommend 4. 1 for the TV. 1 for the GAMING DEVICE Last 2 for: FOXTEL or TIVO or OTHER GAMING DEVICE OR ETHERNET DEVICE Alternatively you could use 2 runs (which is where the 4 runs comes from) for distributed HDMI systems etc. If you will NEVER use 2 runs is plenty (1 for redundancy) and if you use more devices you can insert an ethernet switch at a very low cost. 4 does sound like a lot but the cost to do 4 runs is the same as 1 (plus the cable cost) and when a 305 meter reel is so cheap why wouldn't you? Sometimes planning for the future (or future proofing as some call it) is not too expensive! Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 23Feb 28, 2011 2:44 pm Hi Matt, I've done this in my build (4 points to main TV room) but just wanted to say that you are charged for it. $100 per Data point so 4 points is charged as $400. I questioned it but was told that that's just what it costs, no negotiation... That is a rort! 305m box of cat 6 is around $130 retail. When you have to have the builder do it - because thats the "rules" then 2 is probably a better option. That sux Eskay! (edit) just saw you plan and figured out who your builder was!! Even more disappointed now considering who the cablers were!! Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 25Feb 28, 2011 5:58 pm Just use a gigabit switch if you need more. I have 2 data points in my theatre room but use more than 2 so just chucked a 5 port gigabit switch in. They are cheap as chips these days. Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 26Feb 28, 2011 6:22 pm Hey WBA, The switch is a good idea provided you are using it for the internet. If you are using it for distributed AV for example you need multiple runs dedicated to this! Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 27Feb 28, 2011 10:07 pm mattwalker Ouch! Hi Matt, Once you have the Cat6 who would you suggest to install it and what would be required as in time? Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 28Feb 28, 2011 10:23 pm Preferably someone who knows what they are doing Rod or myself would be happy to point you in the right direction. If you are local perhaps we may be able to do it for you! As for time it is hard to say without seeing the environment. If it is up an outside wall on a single storey house on a tiled ceiling to th esame on the other end it could be as little as an hour for 1 run... We would be happy to work out some rough ideas for you though Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 29Feb 28, 2011 10:44 pm mattwalker Preferably someone who knows what they are doing Rod or myself would be happy to point you in the right direction. We would be happy to work out some rough ideas for you though No Sorry mate, i have given you the wrong idea. i was more interested becuse you thought the $400 was very exspensive, i thought you suggested to do a DIY. all good sorry about that Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 30Mar 01, 2011 7:54 am lol! No misunderstanding...just the way I read the question! The $400 is expensive based on the cost of the cable and the labour involved. It is really 1 run with 4 lots of cable so the time is the same. Even if the run was 50 metres (total 200 metres of cable) and it took 2 hours at $100 per hour and you marked the cable up 100% (from $130 to $260) you would still fall short. It annoys me when builders charge a MASSIVE premium for a job that does not cost a quarter as much as it should!
