Reason being is that the internet and entertainment are blending at a very fast rate. Many new TV's even have an internet port that will allow you to surf the web in your lounge room. You will also require an internet connection for many newer devices such as BluRay players. This connection will give you lots more info, games, trailers etc on Blu Ray titles. Still in its infancy but coming on line. Also useful for automatic software updates. I understand that Tivo has a wireless Dongle, but you will always find hard wired cables faster and more secure. Best to do it right while you are framing. Will be the best couple of hundred bucks you spend. Data points are not expensive. CAT6 cable is as cheap as chips. Just remember that for every line you will need to plug it in somewhere. Just a cheap ethernet hub is fine. You can source them on Ebay for about $20 for an 8 into 1 board. Something like this is fine. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 1613wt_907 Good luck with it all! Greg Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 6Dec 14, 2010 7:13 pm Thank you that is very helpful, especially didn't realize about the ethernet hub! Does it then plug into your wireless router (still need wireless for phones etc) or can you get an ethernet hub that also provides the wireless connection. Cheers Donna Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 10Dec 15, 2010 10:30 pm I wired up 4 behind living room TV and 6 with spare conduits for more if needed to Theater room and plenty to rest of the house all running to linen closet where I am taking over the top shelf. You can never have enough Data points I am a cabler though so cheap for me. Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 11Dec 16, 2010 2:56 pm A pretty handy rule of thumb is to double what you're going to use today. So if you think you're going to use 2, put in 4. The way these things explode you'll probably need the extras at some point. Put them next to every TV point in my house. I take it a step further and put a TV point in my study as well. If you have a single story house and don't want to install cable just yet. Try and drill holes in the frame, if your builder will let you and put bits of rope down the wall. Tie the top of the rope to a bit of wood in the roof. That way someone can easily run cables once your house is built. If you organise for a phone point to be put at your patch panel (where all of your data points terminate), you can then put your internet router in the patch panel. Or you could then make any of your data points and phone points. Re: Should I get an internet connection point at the tv 16Dec 20, 2010 12:39 pm Why do you need more than one ethernet point per location. I would have thought that one point with an ethernet hub would be sufficient, it is not likely that you would be streaming more than one lot of information to your TV or Surround System so you shouldn't need a better link. I am only saying this because my heart sank when I saw people talking about putting in four points, whereas my new house will only have two, then I had the light bulb moment of adding a hub in with the entertainment unit system. Please let me know immediately if I am being an idiot.
