Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 01, 2010 11:43 am Hi I got a house built and there is a separate room for Home Theatre. I originally planed to install Bose speaker system. Then I started talking to Home Theatre installers to get quotation for normal in-wall and ceiling-mounted speakers. Most of them advised me not to install Bose speaker system as they are not good in a big room which is not sound proof. Now I am looking for Boston speakers and an Onkyo AMP. Also, I would like to know the brands of best Screens (fixed). Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks Re: Home Theatre Speaker System - What is Best? 2Dec 02, 2010 10:06 am Hi mate. There are more reasons than those to not go for Bose, but the fact that you're not is good enough for me. Paradigm speakers are better value than Boston Acoustics (they have very similar qualities in terms of build, pedigree, sound, - in fact the Paradigms would even have an edge here) - and I can say that because I'm a reseller of both. With Paradigm you all of the high-end quality that both of these brands offer, but generally across the board Paradigm ask for less $$ than the others (than many, many other similarly high quality speaker brands). For in-wall/in-ceiling speakers Paradigm are significantly better value (as I've always thought the Boston ones were a little pricey). For affordable speakers check out their CS range: http://www.paradigm.com/index.php?optio ... 1&Itemid=2 In terms of quality I also believe (as do many) that Marantz is a superior brand of AV electronics than Onkyo. Check out the Qualifi web site for specs and RRP pricing of Marantz stuff: http://www.qualifi.com.au/index.jsp?page=1043 Re: Home Theatre Speaker System - What is Best? 4Dec 07, 2010 3:50 pm Bose Lifestyle systems (the ones with the tiny little cube speakers + descrete subwoofer) are WAY over-priced for what you get (aside from their reputation, which is what most of the asking price is being spent on...). Basically, as far as features, connectivity and most imporatnly sonic performance, the Bose Lifestyle systems can be matched by other brands' systems costing SIGNIFICANTLY less. For example: http://www.yamahamusic.com.au/products/ ... HT-494.asp or even something like this (although in this case it's not too high in the amount of connection options it offers - more on par with the lower Bose Lifestyle systems, however it still offers more and will sound better - and all for $599!!): http://www.sony.com.au/product/bdv-e370 Re: Home Theatre Speaker System - What is Best? 6Dec 08, 2010 10:46 am I think you might need to provide some guides as to what type of subwoofer you are considering (eg. budget, size, performance). Eg. I really, really like the Paradigm DSP-3400, which has a RRP of $1600. It is an awesome performer for that $$. It is quite large for a moderate Home Cinema - it's a 14" driver with a 300WRMS amp - but it certainaly provides all of the impact I'd want for a moderate to serious setup (which is why I have one ). Re: Home Theatre Speaker System - What is Best? 7Dec 26, 2010 7:01 pm NcgQ Thanks for your reply. If you could please kindly let me know the other reasons why I should not buy Bose. Thanks I agree with Rod. The defamation law reminder makes me just say "DON"T DO IT!" Buy speakers from a speaker manufacturer and buy components from a component manufacturer. In my opinion get a sub designed to run with the speakers so the same brand speaker/sub is better as the transition is usually smoother. I also like Marantz but they have been a little slow on major upgrades lately and are a little $$$ for the features but overall top quality. If you have the cash the same Qualify website also has MK speaker sets [I have a set of the US originals] which are simply awesome. Being a builder is more than just having once held a hammer. Pioneer SC LX83 AV receiver OzTheatre 'Majestic' Evo3D fixed screen (16:9) Just my two cents worth Cheers Adam p.s. bang for buck - i reckon the Legend Kurlo 6 subwoofer is pretty much unbeatable Re: Home Theatre Speaker System - What is Best? 9Dec 27, 2010 5:05 pm BuildingACT Hi NcgQ I've been slowly putting together my home theatre setup so, for what it's worth (and depending on your budget/main use), I've gone for: Pioneer SC LX83 AV receiver Having done a fair bit of research and gone back and forth between a number of options, I couldn't be happier with each of these selections so far!! Just my two cents worth Cheers Adam A little OT but..... I have the Pioneer SC-LX82 [non 3D] and it's a great AVR - IMO $2k well spent as THX Ultra2 AVR + THX speakers = Being a builder is more than just having once held a hammer. Re: Home Theatre Speaker System - What is Best? 10Dec 27, 2010 7:37 pm Paradigm Speakers are awesome. I'd highly recommend those. Almost bought a pair for myself but decided to get Martin Logan Electrostatics instead. For your screen - it depends. If it's a fixed screen (not retractable), then you can just paint your own on the wall. If you want speakers behind the screen like you do in the movie theater, then you need an acoustically transparent fabric screen so that the sound passes through the screen. If you want a simple roll down screen (motorized or not), there's a lot of options out there. my house blog: http://sugarloafdrivebuild.blogspot.com/ We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds.
