Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Aug 15, 2010 4:14 pm Hi everyone I have been lurking this forum for a while and i am doing my head in atm as to what to do originally i was just going to put a plasma or lcd tv in there with the following equipment Kenwood receiver model KRV-V5100D with Pure Acoustics speakers Panasonic Dvd Recorder / Dvd Player ( But will upgrade this with a Blu-Ray player with Twin Hd Tuners Lg or Similar Wireless) But i am now thinking of using a projector instead of our 50" Plasma which we will probably now put in the much larger family room. any suggestions would be great the theatre room is 4.900mts Long x 3.900mts wide We are thinking the house will be cat6 cabled and speaker wire throughout so that sound can be piped throughout the house as well as internet anywhere and everywhere. There will be a direct line from the study to the theatre for movie streaming. Is this overkill or do we need more. We are trying to futureproof the house as much as possible. But without the $$ if at all possible. BIL is a licenced cabler so we are doing much of it ourselves. Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 2Aug 16, 2010 11:45 am I am running cat6 cable to every bedroom, lounge, media, kitchen, and activity. I am just not a fan of projectors at all so I would definitly say go plasma. Purely a personal preference, go with whichever you like the look of more and can afford. Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 4Aug 16, 2010 8:01 pm At 4.9m long I say a projector will go comfortably in that room, and if you are going to be sitting against or near the back of the room then a 110-115" screen will do nicely... Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 5Aug 17, 2010 6:31 pm Thanks for the replies can you please recommend any brands for projectors i am thinking of using it as a tv would that be ok cheers Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 6Aug 21, 2010 8:06 am Good projector brands: BenQ Epson Mitsubishi Infocus Optoma Sharp Panasonic just to name a few... It still is as much a matter of taste as plamsas and LCD TVs (some people will swear one brand is better than another). Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 7Aug 23, 2010 11:56 am I like both plasma's and LCD's. I have a lcd for the main lounge as it is much better (IMO) for areas where there is lot of natural light. We are going to put a plasma in the media room for because I believe it is a superior picture IF lighting is not an issue and becuase of the movement blur is sometimes very annoying with the LCD esecially when watching sports Our Build https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36661&start=40 Land Settlement - 19/07/09 Building Deposit Paid - 14/02/10 Site Scrape - 25/08/10 Slab - 01/09/10 Frame - 15/09/10 Roof - 21/09/10 Pre Wire/Plumbing - 23/04/09 Bi-Folds - 24/09/10 Bricks - 13/10/10 Plastering - 13/10/10 Cornice, skirting, shelving - 14/10/10 Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 8Aug 24, 2010 10:41 pm Missing Link We are thinking the house will be cat6 cabled and speaker wire throughout so that sound can be piped throughout the house as well as internet anywhere and everywhere. But without the $$ if at all possible. BIL is a licenced cabler so we are doing much of it ourselves. Dont think its overkill at all for a modern house. A wired Ethernet network is the best thing and I am so glad we went to the expense at construction to provide it. If you have a certified cabler on board to install, buying the cable is really cheap, run it everywhere, even if some runs are coiled up and left in the wall for later... Not sure what you mean by a direct link between the study and theater room? If the link is for ethernet it really wont serve any purpose. You need both rooms to come back to a central point (where all your other data points will be too I presume) and connect them all through a switch and router (router for sharing of your internet with the network). As long as the network is at least 100 mb/sec (better to go gigabit, 1000 megabits per sec if your buying new kit and your devices support it) there will be no problem streaming your video files across it, even with other general network traffic. Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 9Aug 25, 2010 6:43 pm thanks for the input people Sierra we ran 2 cat6 cables to bedroom 2/3/4 and the family room 6 cat6 to the study & bedroom 1 and also tv points to all rooms all back to one distribution point need to work out wether to use a starserve cab or a data cabinet cheers Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 10Nov 07, 2010 1:55 pm Hi Rodda i am back just about ready for a projector as previosly mentioned the room is 4.900 deep and 3.900 wide we plan on having the couch pretty much up against the back wall i am thinking of using my current equipment if that suits Kenwood KFR-V1500D Amp Steinman Sub Pure Acoustic Front and Centre speaker Need New Rear speakers Ceiling mount as we left the other ones in the house we sold i Need some brand and models for a decent Projector and if it would suits any help would be great thanks Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 12Nov 26, 2010 4:16 pm Many projectors will suit. It still depends on how big a screen you want - if you go for a larger one (say 115") then you will probably not be able to squeeze a DLP-based one into the projection distance you have - more likely you'll need an LCD one. Check out Epson and Mitsubishi. Re: Theatre room Help and suggestions 13Nov 30, 2010 9:39 am Hi there, Rodda is right on this one. I think that a DLP projector may be a bit of a squeeze due to their lower flexibility in placement options. I would go for an LCD model. They are all pretty good right now. You have not mentioned your budget???? I use a Mitsubishi HC6800 and it is a fine projector. Great reviews and a very 'film like' image. Also check out the Panasonic PT-AE4000 which is another good one. If you are looking to use for TV viewing (and you can totally control light in the room) I would look for a projector with a low lamp setting. Mine will run for 4000 hrs, which makes it fairly cheap per hour. The BenQ W1000 is a very good DLP budget projector and if you have a throw distance of about 4.9 metres, you can expect to get a 16:9 screen size of about 115 to 120 inches which is in the sweet spot for that projector. The lens would need to be 4.5 metres from the screen. This would be about your best budget entry point. This is one DLP that may do the trick. Just make sure that you watch it first - some people can see a 'rainbow effect' with DLP projectors. Can be very annoying if you are one of them. Just remember to budget for a screen. Check out Selby Acoustics, who have a great range at not a lot of money. Coming from someone who has a 50 inch plasma, an LCD screen and also a projector, for big screen impact, there is no substitute for a projector. But, you must be able to control your room light levels.
