Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Nov 05, 2010 8:57 am ok so I haven't got my ipad as yet, but I just want to be prepared for when I do. I need to know how to connect it up to the internet. currently at home we have optus broadband, and we have it set up as wireless through a router. but the router is so old that it can only handle one laptop. our other laptop has to be plugged in with a cable if we want to use the internet on that. we can use both laptops on the internet at the same time though (with one on a cable one thorugh the router). when I get my ipad, will we have to buy another router to be able to connect that AND the laptop at the same time? also, will I be able to use the ipad outside of the range of the router? I can connect to the internet on my mobile phone wherever I am, does the ipad work the same way? maybe I can just piggy back it on to my mobile account? how does it all work? can anyone tell me what the best thing to do is? I am getting the ipad for free from work so I can't ask my place of purchase! thanks in advance! Re: iPad connectivity question 2Nov 05, 2010 9:10 am depends on a few things. If your ipad is 3G and work is supplying you with a sim card and data plan then you can use that to access the internet ie. you don't need to connect it to your internet at home. However if it is just a wifi model or you want to access your internet at home (say you might have high speed broadband) then you can connect via the wifi on the router). You said that this doesn't work very well then you might need to buy another wifi router. These are pretty cheap. Depending on what you have ADSL or cable will determine what the best way to go is. Re: iPad connectivity question 3Nov 05, 2010 9:29 am A-ha, so they have sim cards... that makes better sense. I think if they don't give me a sim card (I reckon they won't cause they won't know what plan we want) then I might go buy one, that would work wouldn't it? and just do like a pre-paid sim card? but I have to make sure its 3G first... if it isn't 3G, could I still do it with a sim but it would be slower? ok. thanks WBA I knew you would help me "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. I have the 3G and wifi version.. so mine has a sim card in it for when I'm away from home or on the train etc I can use the net.. I use my wifi when I'm home because it is faster. Re: iPad connectivity question 5Nov 05, 2010 9:41 am ah ok. so if mine ends up being the wifi only version, I will have to get a new router and use it through that? and I won't be able to use it away from the house (or anywhere else they don't have wifi like at those mcdonaldses and stuff)? I won't be able to use it just at, say, my parents' place where they have wireless for their own pc would I. Re: iPad connectivity question 6Nov 05, 2010 9:46 am if it is wifi only then yes it is alot less portable. Re: iPad connectivity question 7Nov 05, 2010 10:43 am also note that you need to get the right sized sim card if you are getting the 3G one. the one for the iPad is smaller i think? I just cut my normal sim to the smaller shape.. but if you don't know what your doing your better off going to the telco and getting the smaller sim. Re: iPad connectivity question 9Nov 05, 2010 11:25 am ok great, thanks for all that WBA and pugs. Is it always the same laptop that won't connect? I would test the iPad with it first before buying a new router. What model is it? Re: iPad connectivity question 11Nov 06, 2010 3:50 pm hi Machiars... yes I think that's a good idea to test the ipad on the old one first. ummm, it's a Balkin...? i think? or dalkin, but that sounds more like an air con... DH has been on the phone to them at various points and we had a tech-head type guy over to set it all up wirelessly when we first moved in, the guy spent a whole day here (poor guy, this is after quoting us $100 to set it all up ) and concluded that we could only have it running the way we do. I can't remember if its only the other laptop that doesn't work but that laptop is very slow anyway so it'd be a bigger deal than its worth to find out IYKWIM... are you in Melb? do you want to come over and take a look? lol. This way you can have multiple laptops going and the iPad. The iPad works well with any wireless network, so if you go somewhere else with WiFi, you can connect. 3G can get expensive since you have to pay monthly charges. Unless you really need to use the iPad on the go, it will cost a lot for little benefit. I have an iPad and once my house is finished I'm going to look into tethering the iPad off my iPhone (if at all possible). It is possible to tether your ipad off your iphone but only if you jailbreak your iphone. Re: iPad connectivity question 17Nov 07, 2010 1:53 pm Machiars I am in melb, to the North. When you get your iPad I can talk you through testing some things if you like. thanks, much appreciated Casa2 donuts, I would get your wireless router fixed up. Cheers, Casa thanks casa, yeah I guess I don't really *need* to access it on the go, it would just be a really good feature if I could. otherwise it would just be like another laptop really, only without some of a laptop's capabilities... my phone contract is up in another couple of months and I wasn't going to jump on the iphone bandwagon...but if there's the ability (and benefit) to put my ipad on the same bill thing then maybe I will consider it "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. The one a few people at work have is $150 for 12gb for 1 year. If you look at the bottom of your router, it will have a model number. If you get a chance could you post it. See what model you have to play with Re: iPad connectivity question 19Nov 07, 2010 9:41 pm thanks Machiars, that sim deal doesn't sound too bad. how long would it take me to use 12gb I wonder? I don't play many games or all that. does the ipad have apps, like an iphone? do they get included in your GB amounts? Just looked at the bottom of the router - it says "Belkin Wireless G Router" and the model number is F5D7230-4. Does that tell you anything? Re: iPad connectivity question 20Nov 08, 2010 8:12 am That router should be fine for all of your devices. While it is old they should be able to connect to it. From the spec sheet it stated that it can connect up to 16 devices on the wireless. It looks like it only has WEP which is the "encryption" that it uses, which is old but will get you on the internet.
