Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Oct 22, 2010 9:24 am Hi, I'm putting together a HVAC control using (I hope) a computer as the main control and a bunch of X10 switches to control dampers and the heat pump. I've done a bunch of research which suggests if I was living in the US this would all be easy. The options seem to be more limited in Aus. Are there any X10 experts here? My motivation for using this technology is to avoid going to a semi-commercial PLC for both cost and usability reasons. I intend to drive the whole system off a linux based tablet PC wall mounted as a control and integrate energy monitoring and some appliance/lighting control. Has anyone got a good or bad experience with this kind of thing? cheers JMB -------------------------------------- I'll have a go at that, how hard can it be? Re: Any X10 enthusiasts? 2Oct 22, 2010 5:01 pm I'd be interested in hearing your experiences. I only went so far as extensive research but never implemented it. Reading all the reports of misc. voltage changes being interpreted as signals turned me off but apparently the technology is a bit better these days. Though I see a lot of devices labelled as 'X10' being coupled with wireless. Re: Any X10 enthusiasts? 3Oct 22, 2010 6:28 pm I've been using X10 for a while to control lights and various appliances, check if doors are open etc. It's really just been as a hobby with me. I don't control HVAC with it, but I've got used to it and when I visit other people I expect the lights to just turn on when I go into a dark room and turn off when I leave - lol. The main problem with x10 as opposed to some other systems is that you need 'clean' lines. You can use filters on power points with interfering appliances. I have one noisy circuit that I avoid for x10 plug in devices. The other power circuits are fine at my place. (I also have quite a few wireless motion detectors as part of the system.) Check out the homeseer forum - it's got users from all over, but mostly from the USA. I use Homeseer (no other affiliation with it) and can recommend it if you like to program stuff (vb scripts etc). Otherwise there are simpler applications that you can use. The homeseer app has lots of add-ons so you can use it with x10 plus various other technologies, all at the same time. A question. Im in Queensland and building a new home. We managed to reach practical completion 6 weeks ago but we haven't heard any date for handover yet. Who should we… 0 5799 i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits. There's only one… 7 12711 I am looking at building a house. Has anyone used Construkt Homes (based in Adelaide)? Does anyone have experience with this builder? 0 6398 |
