He can do all the wiring and Hills System for about $3,300 which is 1,700 cheaper then original quote So guessing this is more around the mark. He also can do a AusVac Ducted System installed for $1,500 All other extras cabling was similar to my original quote eg the Home Theatre Cables. Appreciate all the advice into the custom systems but still without doing this before it can be a little to much information to take in unless got someone nearby that lays out this exact type of system and walks us through it. If I was just get a Hills System could we just upgrade this easily by putting a new router / switch in it etc if needed when I get my head around seeing how it operates better. Would this allow us to then get the faster speeds and HD Content or is there more to these systems that would need upgrading that are letting them down that have not been mentioned. Re: Smart Wiring Setup Prices 26Sep 23, 2010 11:40 am It really depends on what you want the system to do. All the hills system does is use a heap of splitters to take one source and send it to multiple locations, so for phone and data it uses the cat 6 and video distribution uses the coax cable. Yes you could replace the switch later but cost wise would not be the best idea. All you need is the following cabinet patch panel gige switch aplified coax splitter This will get you a similar setup to the hills system. If you let us know what you want to achieve with the system someone might be able to give you some better ideas on equipment you should look at. Re: Smart Wiring Setup Prices 27Sep 23, 2010 12:12 pm Thanks for the response jbo that's making things a little easier comparing them like that to the equipment that is in the hills system. The main purpose is fast internet speeds all through the house with my job. Also there will be a Home Theatre so just want access to the latest technologies always in the Home Theatre room. Pretty much aslong as It is a little flexible to do other things down the track im happy. (eg intercom, security etc) Would prefer to get everything done by one person if possible so I know its all setup way but would I be best just getting the wiring done and then get somebody in to setup a custom solution? If so any recommendations in Victoria? im located in Bendigo. Re: Smart Wiring Setup Prices 28Sep 23, 2010 12:46 pm In terms of home theatre most would recomend to keep most of the gear seperate but best person to talk to about that is Rodda. If you want to stream movies from a PC or a server to the home theatre you just need to get a HTPC, xbox/PS3 or something like a WD live box. For fast internet all you need is a gige switch connected to your router and should be right to go. Sorry have no clue about intercom or security. Not sure about cablers in Victoria as I live in Brisbane however I think pugs has been known to head across into parts of Victoria for jobs in the past so maybe speak to him. (don't shoot me if that is incorrect) Re: Smart Wiring Setup Prices 29Sep 23, 2010 12:58 pm Thanks for the quick reply. In regards to streaming movies etc I have a office at one end the house and the Home Theatre at the other end, I was under the impression that you could stream this through the cabling straight to this room without a PS3 etc through these type of system setups. (Sorry I am new to this which is why so many questions) For the internet yup the gigE switch etc makes sense. The main places computer will be is Study and HT Room anywhere else will probably be just a laptop which i guess just hook upto wireless? other rooms have the points in there just incase for down the track. With the intercom and Security I just need to know this is easy to implement down the track with a Custom System. I guess these are the unknowns so far and was the only reason I liked these all in one systems to start with just because they had parts of each of these features all setup but obviously lacking in areas that you guys have mentioned. Be great if I can find someone that can say ok here is exactly what you need from a custom system that does everything an all in one system does and it allow you the flexibility for the future, see this guy and he will implement the lot for you. Thanks heaps for your help so far. Re: Smart Wiring Setup Prices 30Sep 23, 2010 2:30 pm You cannot stream from the network to a TV or projector, check out this link for some more details of what other people are doing. viewtopic.php?f=34&t=24607 The hills system uses RF through coax cable to distribute video and it very poor quality. It only can hadle FTA, dvd and vcr players and not any digital media or HD content. In terms of the alarm system I think they are seperate systems they just sit in the same cabinent and uses a seperate cable. Again not really sure about this. Re: Smart Wiring Setup Prices 31Sep 23, 2010 4:32 pm Cheers jbo something like the Boxee Box I was thinking more of how it would work, but sounds like there are alot of similar setups in that thread, thanks for the link. What about the Phone points is there anything that needs to be setup in the Cabinet for these or do they run of the same patch panels as the data cables? If you are keen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Structured_cabling it is making things easier for you measure. any Cabler worth his salt will know about this and be able to explain the benefits of it for your house. i personaly woudln't trust an electrician with a sturctured install Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: Smart Wiring Setup Prices 39Oct 01, 2010 3:46 pm WOW great link, that video is really good.
