Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Nov 13, 2007 6:09 pm I am the first to admit that I am driven by price - I'll buy it if I think it's a good deal, and we came [-] this close to buying a new TV on the weekend (ok, hardly home theatre material, but still...) but I was held back by 2 things:
1) Price 2) Size We were looking at the Samsung LCD - 101cm (40inch). Then there was the regular HD, and the Full HD. I'd like to trust the sales guy but after all, they want a sale! The reg HD was $1660, the full HD was $2300. Is it worth going Full HD or does it not make much difference. Is this a good price, average, or could do better? And secondly (or should be firstly), will a 40 inch look silly hung on approx 5m wide wall? Or would it be better to go bigger again? We definitely need a new TV (we own a 51cm regular tube TV), and when we decide on one it will have to do us many years (5+). So who knows about TVs? Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Does size matter? HD True HD? 2Nov 13, 2007 6:45 pm Ok, ready to cop a slapping from Matt or Rod if I am wrong..... but....
1stly: No such thing as Regular HD (as you were told by the salesman) There is only HD (High Definition-Best sound a picture image available at present including 5.1 surround) and SD (standard definition-better than watching and listening to TV reecption through normal arial standard programming) Sales gimicks can comment on HD Ready (in other words it will accept a HD signal) more oftne than not this product is only SD but there is nothing stopping you from putting a HD set top box with it. If this is the case all glass TV's are HD ready as long as you can input into it. Depending on your budget for this unit Ray, 40 inch is fine, if you can afford a 50 inch even better. Just remember to get the best product you can afford, you can always move it to another room in the years to come and go bigger and better again the prices are only going to get lower...... There is: SD 480 / 576 HD 720 TRUE HD 1080 Sorry buddy! A TV that accepts a signal of 1366x768 is clasified as a HD panel but a TRUE HD panel is 1920x1080. Now is True HD better... Honestly I think so. Why? 1080p is becoming the new standard. Channel 7 are already broadcasting 1 show every night in HD and Channel 10 will start in a December. Blueray and HD-DVD players and most new DVD players play DVD's (either in native resolution or upscaled) in 1080. Ray, Get the best deal that you can afford today ... The TV you are looking at will be fine on the wall but you may want to consider putting it up a touch higher than usual and getting a tilting wall bracket to make a feature out of it. HD True HD? 6Nov 13, 2007 8:30 pm Thanks for the replies... I knew the resolution was different between the 2 (hence the HD or Full HD)... but that was about it.
With them in the shop next to each other, we couldn't see any visible difference in them (it was on the free-to-air horse racing), which is why I questioned the worth of paying the extra. So next question - how hard is it to wall mount them - considering the plugs and such are at the bottom of that wall (external wall) so that it's all hidden? Is it better to just have it on a low line TV unit? We do have a height restriction as there is a long thin window that runs 3m of that wall (hence wanting an LCD over a plasma). Ie if the picture was normal digital TV (SD) the picture would look almost the same. If the picture above is where the TV is going I would not wall mount. Lowline cabinet 100%. Leave the TV on its stand. It would look funny on the wall if mounted below the window. What is the reason you want the LCD over the plasma?? Re: Does size matter? HD True HD? 8Nov 13, 2007 9:09 pm Ray/Matt,
Given that there is a large window and a nice outlok from it, would it make sense to have the LCD TV mounted on a wheelable mount. I'm thinking something like those electronic whitboards that can be wheeled around. This way, when watching TV you can draw the curtains and enjoy. When you have quests over and want to use the theatre room as a lounge, wheel the TV out of the way (to the side wall), open the curtains and enjoy the outlook and sunshine. Plasma has a glass screen in front which will reflect light - so probably not a good idea considering the room has 2 x double sliding doors (directly right of where the TV will sit and to the right of the camera) as well as 2 largish higher up windows (one above the TV, the other near the double doors to the right of the camera).
My sister (who we are sharing with at the moment while we both build) has an LG 42inch LCD and considering it's now a year old, it is great from what we see every day! The LG's in the shop left a bit to be desired as far as picture quality - but then it is probably only noticable when they're next to each other. Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Does size matter? LCD is a good choice in that case. Samsung is the number 1 brand in LCD in Australia (and has been for over a year now) with a 3 year warranty as standard they are great value. They are made in the same factory on the same production line as Sony... Have a look at the Sony and then have a look at the price and then go and buy the Samsung! Re: Does size matter? HD True HD? 11Nov 13, 2007 9:30 pm I have to admit that the Sony didn't grab me. I've always thought that they are overpriced.
I just liked the Samsung. Had a nice picture, and not over priced (well, not compared to others). Might have to contact you in a couple of months. Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Does size matter? HD True HD? 12Nov 13, 2007 9:57 pm Heres a little "something" to help you make a decision...

HD True HD? 13Nov 14, 2007 8:16 am Okay so what's the difference between 1080i and 1080p? After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Does size matter? HD True HD? 14Nov 14, 2007 8:28 am muzzman Okay so what's the difference between 1080i and 1080p? i = interlaced p = progressive An interlaced picture displays half the video lines (the odd numbered lines) and then half a frame later it displays the even numbered lines lines. Interlacing relies on phosphor persistence of the TV tube to blend the fields together over a fraction of a second into a seemingly single picture. The disadvantage is that the horizontal resolution is essentially cut in half, and the video is often filtered to avoid flicker (interfield twitter) and other artifacts. So for 1080i, only 540 lines of video are shown at any one point in time. By comparison progressive scan, used in computer monitors and digital televisions, displays all the horizontal lines of a picture at one time as a single frame. So for 1080p, all 1080 lines of video are shown at the same time. Re: Does size matter? HD True HD? 15Nov 14, 2007 8:37 am muzzman Okay so what's the difference between 1080i and 1080p?
