Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Aug 12, 2010 12:09 pm Hi all, I am running a AVR that does not support latest sound formats but as my BluRay collection is growing im thinking maybe it is time to replace current AVR and purchase a new one that can process the latest sound formats, I need a receiver that can decode the latest sound formats as I am using PS3 for BluRay (not PS3 slim) I am considering Marantz SR5003, Currently Running 5.1 sound via Optical to receiver, I am wondering if it will be beneficial to sell AVR that i am using now and buy new receiver that can decode latest sound formats such as the Marantz SR5003. Any thoughts/experience if I would gain by changing receivers to one that decodes latest sound formats. Using 5.1 and 90% HT Re: Could be time to buy a new receiver 2Aug 13, 2010 2:01 pm Firstly, SR5003 is last year's model - current is SR5004 (just so you know). Secondly, be aware that the 'Fat' PS3 cannot send 'Bitstream' or undecoded HD Audio (Dolby HD, DTS HD MA, etc.) via the HDMI cable, - the PS3 does some/all of the decoding itself and sends it as LPCM, so just make sure the AV Receiver you want can process/play LPCM HD Audio signals... Any thoughts/experience if I would gain by changing receivers to one that decodes latest sound formats. Using 5.1 and 90% HT The PS3 can decode Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio - so just let it do all the work. If it sounds poor - buy a dedicated BluRay player that will do a better job. Only the PS3 Slim can send bitstream to an AVR anyway - so even if you buy a newer AVR that decodes HD audio formats, your existing PS3 will not be able to send it bitstream. There is a lot of advertising crap that surrounds "HD Audio" and HDMI 1.3, 1.4 etc... it is all designed to confuse you into buying the latest greatest upgrades that you probably don't really need. Your existing components (as long as your AVR has HDMI in (even 1.0 is sufficient)) should be able to achieve the results that you need. Just send the audio as multi-channel PCM to your existing AVR (via HDMI). If your AVR does not support HDMI - then yes, it is time for an upgrade ... but it does not have to be a high-end upgrade that decodes HD audio, unless you are also prepared to buy a new BluRay player or a PS3 Slim to match. If your AVR does already support HDMI, then you are already set to go ... save your money - or spend it on better speakers Cheers.
