Ours in Melbourne is charging us $100 but even that is more than others I've heard on the forums. If you do a search for what people added you'll see a bunch of prices for add-ons. Buy a 300m roll of cat5e or cat6 for under $200 and do the runs yourself. Then get a cabler over to terminate the ends etc. That would be heaps cheaper than $200 a pop for a data point. Fine if you're OBíng, otherwise.... Well, Acutally, SOME do. I am building with Henley and we have notes on the system to allow my cabler onsite ( who happens to be my brother in law). They initially tried to be difficult about a third party on site during the build process, but finally conceded once I pointed out that we simply wanted to do cable runs for data. So we will be allowed on site when they do the phone point rough in. You are right to the point that NO builder in their right mind will let the owner on site to run their own cable (never mind the fact that you need a licensed cabler by law). I had been led to believe that they charged for each end of the cable. So we were quoted $350 for ours so I think it is a good deal. I am yet to receive the final quote however. We are having cat 6 through the house and wants some additional points. $200 per point seems hefty to me judging from all the response. The gyprock still is not up so don't think it should be so expensive. Mine had no issue what so ever. I told him (not asked told) in the negotiation stage that I would do data, security, video cabling as well as doing C-bus installation. When time came to do a time scale I gave him a rough indication of how long it would take, he advised me when the place was ready to be cabled and ready for fit off. He even advised how I should mark the plaster if I cocked up so it could be fixed by his plasterer. Having said that I am a licenced cabler, but he never asked for that nor seemed to care less and it never came up in any discussion. The only thing he was nervous about was ensuring I didn't drill through a roof truss. Not sure if it made a difference but the way my build was structured I owned the land and contracted him to build the house, as opposed to me agreeing to buy a house that he would build to my specification.
