As this impacts on one of the moderators businesses it has been moved Nice guys Never argue with an idiot!!!! They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience. Re: Impact on the Environment of New Technology?? 3Oct 29, 2007 9:35 pm not censorship, just keeping the thread on topic and starting a new more relevant one here. When moderators gang up and modify posts and topic heading on a regular basis that is not an open forum. I say enough and leave it alone but we will see!!!!! Never argue with an idiot!!!! They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience. Re: Impact on the Environment of New Technology?? 6Oct 29, 2007 10:37 pm I am somewhat biased and I have never hid my feelings on the environment.
I want a big TV I want a V8 and I will enjoy my short time on this earth. Re: Impact on the Environment of New Technology?? 7Oct 29, 2007 11:17 pm I don't have a big plasma or LCD TV, and unlike the current craze I don't really yearn for one either.
However, I do like my V8s, so if I'm not wasting energy on a big plasma & incandescent bulbs, I can drive them without feeling guilty right Matt?? :D Re: Impact on the Environment of New Technology?? 8Oct 30, 2007 12:38 am im going to buy a prius and the other half is getting the petrol guzzeling V8. I figue they cancel each other out - carbon offset

Aside from wondering what "each of the new technologies" means, here's a fairly simple way to find out. Step 1 Find out what the power consumption of your appliance is. I'm going to use a 42" Panasonic plasma TV (which is what I have). From the user manual, the power consumption is 350W. Of course, if you want a completely accurate result, you need to include standby power, but ou can just follow the same principle to add that on. Step 2 Calculate how many hours a week you use the appliance. Let's take a figure of 30 hours. Then multiply that by 52. That's 1560 hours a year. Step 3 Multiply the two numbers together. In this example, we have 350 × 1560 = 46,800 Wh. Divide by 1000 to get 46.8 KWh. Step 4 Multiply the above by 0.001284 (in Victoria). So, 46.8 × 0.001284 = roughly 0.06 tonnes (60kg) of carbon dioxide per year. I obtained the 0.001284 figure from http://www.elementree.com.au/calculator.asp. Of course, you can get a relative figure by simply multiplying the power consumption of any device by 0.001284 (in Victoria); that is how much carbon dioxide the device will be responsible for every hour. --Mike Everything I know, I learned from SBS.
