Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Oct 23, 2007 8:21 pm Does anyone know what the regulations say about how big a hole can be in the frame for running conduit in?
I've heard 1/3 of the width, so on 70mm, thats only for the 20mm conduit size... too bad if I want to run a DVI cable down there. Re: Size hole allowed in noggins 2Oct 24, 2007 7:43 am Hi Parker.
I think what you've heard is perhaps what one person has said. There are some builders that really, really care about putting even the tiniest hole in a stud or, heaven forbid, a ceiling/floor joist, whereas others don't mind so much. In studs and other timbers that bare some load I totally understand the need to be conservative about the hole you put in them. Noggins, however, from what I understand are purely there to keep the spacing between the studs even (as otherwise you'd notice many slighlty bowed studs...). They don't bare any significant load at all, so as long as you leave some of it's thickness intact to maintain a solid connection between the studs it's attached to there should be no issue. Have a look, if you get a chance, at a ducted vacuum installation (before the plaster goes up) and where those conduits go through the noggins. Not much left of the noggin after those conduits are run through them. Re: Size hole allowed in noggins 4Oct 24, 2007 1:03 pm Thanks guys - some good points. I will have to raise them with my builder. I asked him today and he said he got the 1/3 figure from the building code or something.
That's fine (20-25mm) for all the data but the theatre gear is going to need more. Re: Size hole allowed in noggins 5Oct 24, 2007 5:08 pm i heard from an electrician mate of mine that to save drilling through noggins in the section you need to run cables just to turn the noggin as it is only a spacer, the only thing i am not sure about is if the plaster is secured to noggins or just uprights. Re: Size hole allowed in noggins 6Oct 24, 2007 8:58 pm The plaster is generally only secured to the studs (uprights)
Feel free to turn the horizontally... can’t tell from the photo, a tie down rod will be 12mm, is it a steel beam? he should be able to work it out 1 4463 Thanks for your advice.
