Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 25, 2010 1:03 pm Hi All, My dillema is that i think its going to be impossible to convince the misses to not have no window in the Theatre room. Here is a very quick Paint drawing of my proposed Theatre room. http://i745.photobucket.com/albums/xx91/steveonkyo/TheatreRoom.jpg. So here are my options and i would like your feedback on each option or any other suggestions and if you think it will be ok. The projector will be above the 820mm dual doors and projecting towards the current window. Should I 1) Remove window all together 2) Remove window and place two 300mm wide x 1800mm high windows to each side of the Projected wall. Still allowing room for up to a 110 inch screen on the wall. And get heavy wall to floor drapes to cover windows when Theatre is in use. 3) Electronic Pull down screen just in front of current window? 4) Will a 110inch screen be fine in this sized room, or would 100inch be more sufficient. 5) Would it be better to use 2 solic core 820mm doors, if so can twin opening doors still be sealed with a door sealing product? Thanks any suggestion, ideas etc. Would be a real help. Obvioulsy budget is a concern and so is the WAF. Re: Home Theatre Room Windows or no windows!! 2Jun 25, 2010 1:12 pm If you are on a tight budget what about just getting heavy block out drapes for the current window and having the Electronic Pull down screen in front of current window as you have suggested? At least then there is no cost in removing the window or replacing it with other windows etc and still having to get drapes for them. My room is 4m from the back of the couch to the screen with my eyes maybe another 400mm in front of that. Your room is 4470 but then you need to leave space for the doors to open. If the door is 820mm you're down to 3650mm and you need to leave, maybe, 500mm to get past. That makes the back of your couch at 3150mm to the wall and your eyes somewhat in front of that when seated (<3m). And that's to the window, not where the screen is likely to be if you use a motorised drop down one. Even with a recliner moving your head a few cm's further back I think you'll find that is very close. Could be worth turning it around and putting a 94" on the longer wall and have the width for more seats?? That's still 3900mm vs 3150mm. My 2c. SK Thanks Eskay for your quick answer, I have used a caluculator that worked out successful room sizes, here is the info from the calculator. Terry Montlick Labs Room Dimensions Calculator This calculator implements the formula for best room dimensions proposed in 1996 by Robert Walker of the BBC. It's been adopted as a standard by both the European Broadcasting Union and the International Electrotechnical Commission. It is simply this: 1.1w/h <= l/h <= 4.5w/h - 4 where l, w, and h are the room's length, width, and height, respectively. The other rule is that no room dimension should be within 5% of any multiple of another room dimension. My room the way its situated now is a good start, If i flip my room around and project on opposte wall, my room wont be as ideal acoustically as i would like. I also have used a few projection calculators (projector central) and they suggest ideal seating distance for a 100inch screen is 3.1 - 4.9 well within my reach as im thinking of having one door permanatly closed allowing me to get into theater room easily. Im not so sure if my calculators are incorrect which they queit possibly could be. i download a few differant ones off the net. One says that for a 100inch screen seating distance should be this below. THX Longest Allowable viewing distance2 4.79 meters SMPTE Longest Recommended viewing distance 4.13 meters THX Longest Recommended viewing distance 3.41 meters Shortest recommended viewing distance5 1.58 meters THX was what i was going off. My seating will be around the 3.4 area? Am i reading these calulations correctly?? Now im more confused. Whats the differance in quality from a wall mount over a pull down? My thinking was that a wall mount would be more square and create a sharper image and a pull down would be able to slighly move and not being as taught creating ripples in the picture? Am i right in thinking this? Re: Home Theatre Room Windows or no windows!! 6Jun 25, 2010 4:13 pm Hi Steve, Your calculations are correct according to the calculators. The problem I have is that the THX standard is described as being for totally immersive viewing where you are surrounded by the picture experience. So you are close enough to see the pores in the actors faces. That's a 36 degree viewing angle. SMPTE, which is the defacto std for most cinemas has the viewing angle at 30 degrees, so a little further back. This is for 1080p projectors too, anything less and the equation changes again. If you find some other calculators that look at visual acuity - how good your eyes are and how comfortable you are in front of a screen, I think you'll find they say min about 4 metres for a 100" screen. It's completely a personal decision how comfortable you are with the width. If you're the kind of person that loves being in the first few rows at the movies, this will be fine for you. I usually sit at the start of the 2/3 ranege in a cinema. Thanks again. Ill see if i can get my hands on a calculator your reffering too. the one i have might even have this. Re: Home Theatre Room Windows or no windows!! 8Jun 29, 2010 11:00 pm Hi there, I agree with what the guys are telling you. However, Home Theatre and room construction is all about Research, Research, Research. You will also find a plethora of information on avsforum.com. This is a US site but is MUCH larger than anything we have in Australia. You will find the answer to just about anything you need. An Australian site is dtvforum.com.au. Again, not as large as avs but there are a stack of Aussies who will be more than happy to share their experiences with you. One thing you will find is that no matter where we live, home theatre enthusiasts are a pretty enthusiastic bunch and happy to share what we know with others...even what you would think are silly questions are questions each one of us has personally asked. Good luck with your research and with your room. Regards. Greg Only suggestion I would add is to get your equipment mounted up and project onto your wall until you find a size that is right for you. What I find immersive, my wife finds nauseating! Experiment a little with the projector to find the size that suits YOU and then get your screen. Just my 2 cents....
