Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 22, 2010 1:15 pm Hi Guys, Rodda, Day for asking about layouts and screens I think. I have a similar question on the size of screen that is practical for viewing in a room that only has 4m depth. Putting in a theatre seating set obviously brings you closer. I'll also need an LCD type projector which I hope to be either Epson TW3500 or, at a stretch, the 4500. I have the following layout room and will put the screen on the angled wall to the right of the doors. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The builder is recommending a 94" screen. The question is, would you go any larger and still be comfortable? I know many advocate the bigger the better and my initial desire was 110" but after reading everything Rodda has said and agreeing with it, I'm now after the most reasonable size advise. Thanks Guys. So a 94" would seem to fit just fine into that. I was kind of hoping to make it a bit bigger but that sounds fine. Thanks again. It's not fun when noone answers We've been looking at tv's as well. My LG 42" plasma is about 2.5 years old, and it's doing some funny things lately.. switches off and back on randomly (anywhere up to 4 or 5 times a day) and it's got a blue 'noisy' patch at the right hand side that you can see when you first turn it on. So, we're thinking it's not going to be too long before we need another tv.. hopefully it will hang out for a few months until we're in the new house. Our new living room will be 5370 x 4120. Tv and lounge will be on opposite ends of the 5370 walls. DP was thinking a new 50" would be good... the calculations in that article reccomend a 72" for our distance. So now we have the choice of either going broke or going blind to watch tv! Lucky we all have glasses we can wear Oceanic with Nautilus upgrades. Handover 8 September 2010 Re: Screen Size - being reasonable. 5Jun 24, 2010 9:05 am Hi Oceanus, The plasma's have regularly had power supply problems because of the power they use and the heat they produce. It sounds like your plasma is going into thermal shutdown (I'm an electronics techo) which would just need a new power supply. It shouldn't be too expensive as it's one of the cheapest parts in the set. The blue patch could be several things. Is there a speaker close to that side? When we build our living room will be about the same distance as yours from couch to tv. We're thinking about one of the Samsung 55" LCD. I wish they made them in a 65" inch but they only do the plasma's that big. One other option that we're thinking about is to have the couch a little away from the wall by using a sofa table behind it so that you can have tissues and other things behind the couch as well as the surround speakers on stands. That brings the couch forward a little more and closer to a reasonable size tv. The HT will still have the projector and screen, even though it's a shorter distance SK Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34120 Handover 23 Dec 11 Squatting 21 Dec 11 Fixed 12 Oct 11 Plastered 31 Aug 2011 Framed 7 June 2011 Site Start 7 Feb 2011 Land Titled 18 Jan 2010 Land Deposit 25 Jun 2009 Re: Screen Size - being reasonable. 6Jun 24, 2010 11:55 am Hi guys. Sorry I've not had an opportunity to log on for a couple of days (I lead quite a busy life... ). I would say the mid-90" range is good - 100" is probaly pushing it a bit too far when you consider you will actually be sitting less than 4m from the screen, so your builder has good a size in mind there. I've seen that shape "Home Theatre" room in a plan before... Who's the builder (is it something like Intrepid??)? Re: Screen Size - being reasonable. 7Jun 24, 2010 11:58 am Thanks Rodda - appreciate your time. It's Inspired Homes. It's a trade mark of theirs. GSK over at Point Cook also has one of their homes and has the same design. Very nice - but I would have liked a little more separation of the screen and couch walls. I wrote (at least the bulk of the wording was mine) a feature for a Real Estate newspaper out here in the South Eastern suburbs, and I remember his comments that appeared later in that feature where he stated that the best shape for a home theatre was hexagonal ... (might have had something to do with the fact that his company's design was such). Re: Screen Size - being reasonable. 9Jun 24, 2010 1:38 pm You got it. He has a trademark on it (really!) and checks to make sure no-one else is doing them.. When you sit in it in a display home - it is vey nice. You can have a 4 seater in the middle and a set of 2 seaters either side and the viewing is very comfortable. SK Eskay, yeh there are speakers on either side of the screen, but the blue patch only appears on the right edge. Oceanic with Nautilus upgrades. Handover 8 September 2010 Re: Screen Size - being reasonable. 11Jun 25, 2010 12:02 pm hmm. don't own a plasma so I can't say if it's the speaker causing an issue or not. They did on the old tube tv's. Blue, purple and green effects would be common where they were near a speaker. If the speaker can be moved, it would be good to remove it and see if the tv turned on without that effect on it. I've gone through all of the menu and there's nothing. Check the manual. For some TVs the simple act of turning it off at the wall for a decent length of time will degauss it (Teac TVs used to do this) - perhaps turn it off overnight... Re: Screen Size - being reasonable. 16Jun 25, 2010 5:08 pm Thanks Rodda, I'll give it a whirl tonight.
