Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 21, 2010 2:01 pm Hiya Gurus, DH has asked some questions for me to research..... He needs a fixed wall screen and a projector for our home theatre. Budget around $3-5k for both items. Question 1 - What is the difference between a white projector screen and a grey projector screen? In our previous HT we had a white one but some sites are advertising grey now. Is one better then the other? Question 2 - Does anyone have any good recommendations for a 120" fixed screen? We had a LP Morgan Galleria in our last one - have seen some online called Image Theatremax - anyone heard of these? Question 3 - Best projector for this budget? It is a solely dedicated home theatre room and is almost pitch black - no ambient light. Again last time we had a Sony but this is 6yrs ago and we pretty much just walked into the shop and said this is our budget, what can we get and they chose it all for us (unfortunately they have since gone belly up so can't ask them again for any help ) Any other info I should be asking? Thank you. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Projector and Screen questions? 2May 23, 2010 5:45 pm Hi there. 1. Grey screens are, in my opinion, not necessary. They were introduced many years ago in an attempt to enhance contrast, but also increased the potential for some negative effects like altering the colour temp or hues of the image slightly and increasing the chances of 'hot-spotting'. Today's projectors are capable of much, much higher contrast than they were back then and now there is no need to use a grey screen (again, at least I certainly don't think there is a need). Having done many installs over many years I have always only used Matt White screens. 2. Selby Acoustics have a 120" 16:9 Fixed Frame screen for $549 (I think that's how much it was - looks like they might be out of stock at the moment) - their 'Deluxe' one, which is actually very decent quality and therefore excellent value. 3. If you want to really save some money I recommend the BenQ W1000 - it's a 1080P DLP projector with some good software on board (for video processing), and all for about $1800. It's very bright too - significantly brighter than it's competitors. To get a projector with any significant improvement in the picture (eg. better contrast) you'll have to spend at least $1000 more... You have no photo with your post. Best I can say is to remove an A&L flyscreen don't be afraid to distort the frame almost like a trapezium.
