Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 07, 2010 10:25 pm Hi all, I'm looking to mount a motorised projector screen (selby 108 inch) within a bulkhead in my soon to be built Lounge/Theatre room. It has 2 main reasons, 1. hide the projector mount 2. mount the screen out from the wall that will have a plasma mounted on it. The builder is OK to build a 400mm x 400mm bulkhead but I have some questions on how it all works, 1. Will the RF remote that comes with the Selby screen work when the screen mount is up in the roof with only a slot in the bulkhead for the screen to come down through ? 2. Any ideas on the best way to mount the screen housing 3. Any ideas on how to trim the bulkhead so its not just a cut in the gyprock. I plan on having a power point mounted in the ceiling so there's no visible wiring. Any help would be really appreciated. Cheers Re: Mounting a Motorised Projector screen in a roof bulkhead 2May 12, 2010 2:37 pm I think the main problem will be how the bulkhead is constructed, you'll have to specify you want a screen to drop down the bottom, so the carpenters will not be able to use any cross bracing across the bottom of the bulkhead. for example these are our kitchen bulkheads, you can see wood bracing across the bulkhead which would prevent a screen from rolling down Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ If your RF receiver on the screen is built into the screen housing, may be difficult to penetrate the plaster; consider an RF repeater unit? Maybe consider having the bulkhead built after the house is done even? That way you can fine tune the position of the screen etc. T&T Knockdown and rebuild - building Metr1con Nolan 41 (43) @ http://tim-and-tina.blogspot.com! http://www.verdantdental.com.au Re: Mounting a Motorised Projector screen in a roof bulkhead 3May 13, 2010 8:14 am The IR receiver in such screens are usually at the end of a length of cable - so that you can locate the IR receiver itself away from the screen (and in custom installs we more often than not have to extend that cable so we can locate the IR receiver where ever we want). The real issue, I think, is that what you really want is a 'hide-away' in-ceiling box for the screen, which contains the screen up inside the ceiling. Screen Technics call it an Interfit Screen Box, for their premium ElectriCinema screen range (or you can just buy their 'Trapdoor' screen - at a premium...). However, I doubt you'll be able to get such a custom item for a budget screen (unless you know how they are designed and can get one made yourself for said budget screen). Otherwise you'll have to get some serious customisation done to the bulkhead itself... Re: Mounting a Motorised Projector screen in a roof bulkhead 4May 17, 2010 10:43 am Thanks for the replies guys. Rod, all I really want is to have both a plasma and projector screen on the same wall. Any other options in your opinion. I could ask the builder to build the TV into a cutout of the wall and then just mount the projector screen on the wall inside the cutout so it slides down over the TV ? But then there will be lots of projector screen cables for power and controllers that I'll need to try and tidy up some how. Surely this is a common requirements... what do other people do ? Thanks again Re: Mounting a Motorised Projector screen in a roof bulkhead 5May 18, 2010 10:11 pm I think I found some info that'd suit what you want perfectly - found it while looking for ideas for my HT; http://www.avforums.com/forums/members/ ... re4697.jpg http://www.avforums.com/forums/members/ ... re4733.jpg click this link http://www.avforums.com/forums/members-home-cinema-gallery/1228760-my-new-home-cinema-refurbishment.html In my first house, I had a 42" plasma on a stand, and my motorised screen was just mounted onto the roof, and dropped down about a foot in front of the TV - this is a pic of my brother playing xbox360 on it (before I moved the TV there and ceiling-mounted the screen). When you started talking about bulkheads and such I sounded like you wanted the screen concealed (completely) while not in use. However, if you are talking about the simple way of doing this it really is a simple as mounting the TV to the wall and then mounting the screen to the ceiling so that it comes down just in front of the TV. You can still see the screen canister when the screen itself is not in use, but at least the make them in white!! And as you can see the cables are all hidden (which is also not that hard to do...). Rod, I did have grand plans to hide the screen and the builder hs factored in a blukhead but given that it's too hard I think I might have to go with the design you've mentioned above. Our ceilings are 2600mm high and the Selby screen is 1350mm high and I'm concerned that mounting the screen to the ceiling will mean that it's too high on the wall and you'll have to look up at the screen. I estimate that the cabinet and centre speaker will be 75cm high so I have 1850mm of wall free and I'd want the screen to get as low as possible. Assuming that the screen canister is about 15cm high + screen at 135cm high, it's still sitting about 30cm too high ? Do these screens all come with a large black section at the top so you can lower it to the desired position ? Thanks again guys. Edit, I assuming that I can run the wiring ie. power up into the ceiling so it's out of the way. And the RF receiver can be mounted somewhere out of the way so that the RF remote can be used to drop and raise the screen. The wired remote doesnt really excite me, can this be disconnected or can I just attach it to the back of the screen canister out of the way ? Re: Mounting a Motorised Projector screen in a roof bulkhead 8May 23, 2010 9:32 am Most decent screens tend to have about 300mm of black 'top leader' and you should be able to adjust the bottom position (when it's finished unrolling) of the screen to use as much of the 300mm as you want. If it was a premium brand you can actually order them with extra top leader (I myself recently needed a 110" 16:9 with the maximum extra 500mm (total 800mm top leader) for a house with 3300 ceilings!). As far as ideal height goes, that's up to you - you can only do what you can do, within your budget... The screen should come with IR (not sure about RF). You mount the IR sensor/receiver somewhere at the front of the room - it is connected to the screen canister by a cable but that cable can easily be extended (it's only 3-4 wires so you can even use standard telephone cable to extend it). In the photo above I'm actually mounting the IR receiver in the upper left corner of the front wall - the cable has been run inside the roof, and I actually didn't need to extend this one as it's usually about 6-7ft long. have you used any of the motorised curtain systems available from Ebay?
