Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Apr 30, 2010 8:25 pm Please help, While preparing to build our new house with a dedicated HT room I am after opinions from those that know much more than I as to which A.V receiver to buy? The room will be 5.0m long * 3.75 m wide. The music we listen to is varied from heavy rock-ACDC - through to easy listening-The Eagles/Fleetwood Mac, along with home movies of course. With the stated room size I need to know if I should get 5/6/or 7-1??? I would also like to be able to have control of 2*sound areas i.e HT area and alfresco area. Budget is between 1-1.5k for the amp and I will get by with my current speakers till funds permit for future upgrades.Any info on where to purchase the sugested amp would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance, Brad. And with respect I have searched archives to my ability and have not found adequate answers. Re: New A.V Receiver Recommendations 2May 10, 2010 10:41 pm Hi there Mudguts. Obviously you need to consider a couple of things which you may or may not have thought about. The amp obviously needs to have several HDMI inputs, especially if you are considering a large screen and projector. As to whether you use 5.1 or 7.1, this greatly depends on a) the quality and size of your speakers and b) your sitting position in the room. To fully appreciate 7.1 properly you need to be sitting no further back than 4 meters (in your room) from the viewing position with the side effects speakers slightly forward or just to the rear of the sitting position. So if you are sitting at 3 - 4 meters from the viewing area you won't be able to enjoy a large screen comfortably such as 104 - 110 inch screen. Dolby has a wonderful web page to help with proper speaker placement and well worth a look at. On the topic of having another zone control, with some amps you have to sacrifice the 7.1 feature of the amp to give you the second zone. So far as which amps are best, well all I can suggest is get out there and listen to them. For HT a good start would be either Denon or Marantz in the budget you're dealing with. Depending on how soon you want your amp, its not a bad idea to pick up run-out models. I saved $3k on my current Denon AVR by doing this but run-out models tend to be more towards the end of the year. A great place to pick-up run-out models is Eastwood HiFi. I've never bought anything from these guys personally but I do know a few people who have and they've been more than happy with their products and service. For example they have the Yamaha RX-V3900 which is normally over $3k for $1990. So if you can stretch your budget, this would be a fantastic AVR to grab. Hope this helps.
