Are there any real differences between a $40 cable and a $180 cable?
I'm looking at a 10 meter cable and dont want to lose quality due to a crappy cable, but nor do I want to be screwed either.
Thanks,

Re: HDMI Cables 2Apr 14, 2010 12:29 pm Answer: $140. On a more serious note, I don't see any difference. The signal is digital. It either gets through orit doesn't. It'sa bit like an antenna for a digital TV. You can get a pretty cheap small antenna and as long as it works, the image on your digital TV is identicla to a TV antenna the size of th Eiffel Tower. Am I better getting agold palted connectors? I've read they provide better connections. I'll be using the cable to go from the PS3 in the cinema room, to the Bravia TV in the family room, via an HDMI splitter Point Cook, Victoria - Being hounded by the fascists!! Re: HDMI Cables 4Apr 14, 2010 2:21 pm Most HDMI cables are "gold-plated" these days anyway. Even if it's not it won't make a difference. You should be able to get a 10m HDMI cable for under $30 ---------------------------------------- Building the PD Lisbon 24 http://www.porterdavis.com.au/#homeviewer/lisbon/24 Blog of our progress. http://lisbon24.blogspot.com/ Homeone build thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28665 Re: HDMI Cables 5Apr 14, 2010 4:47 pm There is some difference in quality in terms of data transfer speed, especially over distance. Some basic cables will be fine for short distances but some high end ones will allow for 10gb ps pass through and are a lot better from longer distances as you get a lot less data loss, well thats how I understand it anyway, an expert may prove me wrong. No difference in data transfer speed at all. It's all about signal attenuation and termination over the length of the run. High quality cables allow for greater bandwidth for the cable length. You're better off saving $120 and buying the cables from Selby's new HDMI range (can't remember the price but they where under $10 each.) and you will not notice a difference. At all. If you don't believe me, buy one from Selby's and worst case scenario is you're out of pocket less than $10 EDIT: Direct link HERE ---------------------------------------- Building the PD Lisbon 24 http://www.porterdavis.com.au/#homeviewer/lisbon/24 Blog of our progress. http://lisbon24.blogspot.com/ Homeone build thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28665 Re: HDMI Cables 8Apr 15, 2010 4:26 pm TimmyDunlop maxyb There is some difference in quality in terms of data transfer speed, especially over distance. So was there a definitive answer to the 10m question? Is there a difference between the $40 and the $150 10m hdmi cables? $110! Hmmm i think parawolf is onto something Re: HDMI Cables 14Oct 26, 2010 2:01 pm There is defnitely some difference in quality - I've had bad experiences with really cheap HDMI cables (basically just not working) like the ones that sometimes get bundled with some gear (cheaper Blu-Ray players for example). As soon as I swapped the cable for a Selby one (P.S. Ugly=Selby) - which in my opinion are also still very affordable compared to big brands like Monster, the problem was fixed straight away with the Selby cable. A 10m HDMI cable for $30 is cheap cheap - I personally wouldn't trust it... Re: HDMI Cables 15Oct 26, 2010 4:03 pm I wouldn't buy an el-cheapo hdmi cable for a 10m run (1-2m run? No problems, buy the cheapest). But a Selby et al at that distance would be fine. Once you start getting 15-20m, yeah, you need something decent, but even that doesn't have to be expensive, about $150 for a 20m cable. I'd suggest the cheap HDMI are not HDMI certified and are probably made in China or similar intellectual property/standards ignorant country. They may carry the term, but from China that doesn't mean much. |
