Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 17, 2010 7:59 am Hey guys, we and the wifey had been mucking around with ideas for a feature wall to hang a projector screen from.
We came across a display at the Big Picture People in Bundoora (don't buy their stuff, too expensive, just look at their display rooms ) and we both fell in love with a vertical tiled stacked stone wall with a plaster projection and the screen hung over the top. It was really funny the guy was pushing really hard for a sale and I just kept taking notes on this feature wall they had I asked around for a few quotes, mainly from plasterers and the numbers made my head spin. So in true DIY fashion so we hit the web looking for cheaper materials, read a few things, I managed to teach myself to plaster (well good enough for this medium sized job), purchased a few toys to get the job done and we think we got what we were after. Im really bad at taking photos, and our camera isn't great so I hope you get the idea Starting with a blank canvas (you can see the 3 colors of tile we were choosing between on the left): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The standard plaster board would not hold the weight of the tiles so we screwed and glued fiber cement sheets to the wall to cement the tiles to later on and terminated another internet point to the room : Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Test fitting some of the boards we cut up: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Running the signal cables: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Plaster on and edging on ready for plaster: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Base coat of plaster on and skim coat drying: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Undercoat of paint on: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Full tiles on, half tiles getting cut, oh we also painted the room a chocolate brown : Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ All the tiles are on, the face plates are on, job done Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We are a while from purchasing all the gear to go in there, so you kind of have to imagine it with a projector screen hung but we figured if we bought that stuff up front we would have set it up, sat around watching movies and never got around to making the room the way we wanted it. So another job done, now for the backyard, not looking forward to that job ... Re: Feature wall for theater room 2Mar 17, 2010 8:05 am That looks awesome mate, love it! Cant wait till our place is built and we can start decorating our theatre room! Re: Feature wall for theater room 3Mar 17, 2010 8:43 am Thanks, we have a few things to do before we can call it finished I guess. Jackie is making ceiling to floor curtains to completely cover 2 walls, one with a window and the back wall also, leaving the wall with the door in it the chocolate brown to contrast against the cremes and other browns in the room. We also need to carpet the stage I built and then to put the gear in there and add a nice couch and a few bean bags Re: Feature wall for theater room 4Mar 17, 2010 8:56 am Amazing DIY, you should be over the moon with it Re: Feature wall for theater room 5Jul 09, 2010 9:51 am Well some more work has gone on with the room, and you know me, crappy photos galore! Here's the step carpeted: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And the wall completed, with some sticky tape for us to guesstimate the size of the screen we were going to go for: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Curtians, we made them so the were full height, oversized the joins and the tops, they go across the back of the room and down the side with the window. They are full block out so even in the middle of the day with these puppies drawn and the door closed NO light gets in. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Just another shot of le' curtains. They still need to be taken in at the bottom to the appropriate length but we are letting them hang to stretch and de-wrinkle a little first. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We have a screen, we went for a 100" delux from selby. At the end of the day we downsized from a 110" on the advice of a great many people, but Im sure now looking at it that 110" would have been just fine, providing the projector could throw that size at distance. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And just another crappy shot for the sake of it Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We haven't mounted the speakers just yet and need to get a power point for the projector sorted out. Not much left to worry about. The photos make the room look small but it hasn't lost its feeling of size when your in there, just the crappy camera work/cameraman . Re: Feature wall for theater room 6Jul 12, 2010 7:51 pm mikkyG, Quick quesiton. What are the dimensions of your step up? How high and how deep. Trying to work out what to use for my house. Cheers, Casa Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Feature wall for theater room 7Jul 12, 2010 7:56 pm Gotta love the guitar hero, rock on We are doing something similar, but apparantly our mini theatre is a dedicated games room I would be interested to know about the step too. Looks fabulous! *nows tried to keep DP away from this post* Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Sincerely, Anonymous Re: Feature wall for theater room 8Jul 13, 2010 12:28 pm Hey guys, I built and carpeted the step after handover, its just made of framing timber and yellow tounge flooring timber from bunnings. The dimensions are from memory are 3.5m wide 2.25m deep (half the room) and 15cm tall (plus underlay and carpet). Re: Feature wall for theater room 9Jul 15, 2010 2:08 pm mikkyG, Great theatre room. Love your curtains . I am planning to do something similar in our theater room. Can you please explain a bit more on how you did them and how you fix them up? What fabric did you use for curtains? Thank you. The feature wall is awesome Re: Feature wall for theater room 10Jul 19, 2010 12:31 pm mikkyG, is coming along nicely. What are the dimensions of your theatre room? Builder: Dennis Family Homes House: Hartley Facade: Provincial Suburb: Lyndhurst Moved in! http://cynash.blogspot.com Re: Feature wall for theater room 11Jul 20, 2010 12:33 pm Dikan, I'll need to ask Jackie for the details, but the material was purchased from Spotlight and is a full block out material. They are attached using standard curtain rails, we went for the rails without pull cords on the end as the curtain is pretty darn heavy so the cords would have been pretty much useless. The curtain on the wall against the wall with the window is actually 2 curtains that overlap a little (so no sun gets during the day) joined in the middle so that we can open them and the window to air the room out or use the room for another purpose from time to time. Asha1, the room is 3.5 x 4.5, so its a pretty small room my most comparisons. The current couch (futon actually :S) only fits 2 people ****** down comfortably. We have around 1 meter each side for the couch to play with and there's a suit at Freedom that fits in the room with 5cm on each side, so if we manage to get that sucker we should be able to have 4 across the back or more if no ones ****** down and a couple of bean bags should see another 2/3 on the floor. Bring on the grand final. Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room. There is a hallway/entry that is never used, so was thinking this could be an option.
