Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 06, 2010 8:17 pm We are building our new house, and it's just occurred to us that we really need to think about how to integrate IT. It's only just occurred to us because we are part of that teeny tiny part of the population who choose not to have a telly. We occasionally watch videos on the laptop, and that's it!!! We have a stereo in the lounge room but it's nothing grand. I suspect we might want the capacity to play different music in different parts of the house, or at the very least, to have speakers in more than one space. In terms of our internet connections, we are currently using ADSL, but I think we are probably going to swap to wireless soon. This is a house to live in, not to sell. But obviously if we were to sell in the future, having a basic IT set up might be important. And who knows, maybe we'll decide at some point that we've missed too much pop culture and that we need a coffee table media projector and drop down screen with full surround sound system. Or whatever else it is that makes for a good multimedia experience. Soooooo, my question for you all is: what would you consider the basics in terms of media cabling for a family that is (ONLY in this regard) still living in the 1940s??? Is cabling still the thing, or is everything wireless nowadays. Please feel free to pm me anyone you'd recommend us talking to for advice. Thanks in anticipation e. Re: Our IT set up - where to start? 2Mar 08, 2010 3:18 am ok a 1940's family in 2010... basically you need to determine what services you want in each room.... ie TV, Telephone and Network... telephone/ network is more or less one "lot" cabling as for wireless internet well stick with adsl is all i can say.... or FTTH if you are building in a an area that has it... main reason for stiking with ADSL.. it is cheaper per month with high data quotas... and doesn't rely on mobile phone tower as a "general" rule of thumb for bedroom areas, 1 x RG6 for TV and 2 x CAT6 for phone/ network for an office area minimum 6 x CAT6 for P&N a couple more if you are having a file server in the office, having basically a "set" of outlets on each wall is a good thing to avoid having to run patch cables around your new house... if you are having a "media center" area then 4 x CAT6 and 2 x RG6 all terminated back to a centeral spot that doesn't get too hot/humid or cold. with out knowing you or your house pan that is the best i can offer this of course isn't a what to install guide meerly an this is an ide aof what you should get installed.... Sounds like what we need to do is take a look at our plans and figure out where we might conceivably want to use computer and ditto TV. What's the go with stereo? I think I've heard that you can now have multi channel sound systems that can stream different music to different rooms? Is that all wireless? I must admit I like the idea of me being able to listen to some nice harp music upstairs while my partner and son jump up and down to death metal (I kid you not!) downstairs. Lucky we've opted for solid rather than hollow core doors. Re: Our IT set up - where to start? 4Mar 08, 2010 10:24 pm Elizabeth Thanks heaps Pugs.
