Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Feb 08, 2010 1:11 pm We've got a 52 inch Sony Bravia, that Iwould like to hang off the wall, however I'm concered with the weight, but also with the wires hanging from the TV to the Foxtel, blu-ray player etc, so ithought about fitting a false wall, with an extra strong bracket for the tV attached, and all of the wires and boxes etc hidden beind the false wall. Anyone got experience of this? Thanks, Point Cook, Victoria - Being hounded by the fascists!! Re: false wall to hand TV off 2Feb 08, 2010 3:12 pm you will need them to install either extra noggins or a "plate" in this a horizontal noggin the same size as the wall mounting plate for the vesa mount. if yu can wait i have client with these and I can take a photo of what i mean Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: false wall to hang TV off 3Feb 09, 2010 7:37 am Its a pretty easy thing to have a go at yourself (that's my stock answer these days) but here is a picture of a very similar thing that I have started to put together to hang our projector screen on (Ignore the mess). When this starts to take shape I'll get around to putting up a proper thread. The 'only' tricky part is finishing the plaster work nice ready to paint. but if you screw it up drop into one of the homes being built near by and borrow a plaster for the afternoon for a few bob, I've already lined one up just in case So buy some steel angle for the edges and put on a plaster top coat... if you stuff it up, a sand and it'll be ready for another shot / or ready for a pro to finish it for you and you'll have only wasted $40 on a tub of top coat. Really something that I think you should give a go. When I first asked asked a local tradie for a quick quote he wanted around >$400 for the wall ready to go, so far its cost me < $80 and all I have left is the top coat, think about making this one a home handy man job. Re: false wall to hang TV off 4Feb 09, 2010 8:32 am OK, for those with no experience in this area (eg. vzbux) I say this in the nicest possible way. For the tradies, long term users (who have read this stuff before) and those who do have experience in this area I'm surprised that there is still confusion about this: Even with a 63" plasma, as long as you get a decent bracket (even one that costs less than $80 - how many ways can they make a steel plate?), you can mount it to at least 2 studs and can get at least 2 large (quite large, but they tend to be supplied with the bracket) hex screws into each stud then unless the studs themselves are rotten/eaten by termites the TV will not fall off. The plate mounted to the wall in this fashion will easily support well over 100kg... (I have literally hung off one myself (not easy considering you can only hang on with your fingertips) to prove the point to a customer, although I only weigh 90kg ). All of this talk about adding noggins and other stuff behind the wall is simply unnecessary. As for the cables, you simply run them down inside the existing wall. The hardest part of that job may be that a noggin is in the way and there is no room to get your cables around it, so the best thing you can do is either locate your top outlet hole just below it or near enough to it to give you access to be able to drill a big hole through it (which can be tricky). If it is an external wall of the house then you will likely have plenty of room to go around the back of the noggin. Thanks mate, that is exactly the answer iwas looking for, I was hoping to hang it direct, but was worried about the weight, you have removed all doubt and filled me with confidence..ish. Re: false wall to hang TV off 7Feb 10, 2010 1:04 pm if you feel filled with confidence wait till your holding a hammer and staring at your wall in your brand new house.... Hi Rodda Our plasma is sitting on a cabinet as I haven't got around to wall mounting it yet. In our previous house, the bracket was attached to a double brick wall with lots of dynabolts. The new house is brick veneer....so a stud internal wall. Now, if I was mounting it direct to the wall, I'd be totally confident.....but the bracket is one of those swinging arm jobbies - at full extension, there's a fair bit of leverage, trying to twist the bracket off the wall. I guess your comment about hanging on with your fingers made it clear to me you weren't talking about hanging off the arm at full extension. Do you think this would still be OK or would a standard stud wall need strengthening? BTW, to complicate matters further, it's not a standard stud wall - see pic. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Although the bracket that attaches to the wall is about 600mm wide, obviously I can only use the centre section to screw it into the studs. My feeling is that it should be OK if I use several hefty couch screws, but I'd appreciate your opinion. Cheers zeke Re: false wall to hang TV off 9Feb 11, 2010 8:40 am Hi Zeke. If you are going to mount the thing in the centre of that wall - where the centre is dominated by those 6 studs joined together (it looks like 6 from here), then it does still give you a lot of timber to screw into - timber that would take a lot, lot, lot more than 100kg of force to pull them through the plaster wall. If the gaps between this and the next single stud(s) is approaching 600mm then you will only have the centre group of studs to screw the back plate of the bracket into (as even if there was a bracket that had a back plate that was over 1200mm wide - and I don't think there is - I think it would be too unattractive to use anyway). Now, if you are planning on mounting a 60+" TV on a 'swing-arm' type bracket then (if it was me), given to opportunity to do it now I would actually consider putting in a couple of extra studs (not noggins, as they will then govern the exact height you can mount the TV) - one on either side of the centre group perhaps with a gap of about 300-350mm (depending on how wide the back plate will be), then you will have plenty to screw into with good dispersion. However, as long as you are using big hex screws (hex screws are better because you can torque them in with a spanner/socket instead of trying to do it with philips-head screws and stripping/ruining the drive slot in the head of the screw ... - and don't forget to pre-drill the holes all the way into the stud to avoid splitting the pine timber and making it a little easier to get the actual screws in...) and the TV is 55" or less then if you can get 6 screws into that middle group of studs (you can even drill a couple of extra holes in the metal back plate of the bracket and get a couple more hex screws sunk in...) it will still be more than strong enough to prevent the weight out at the end of the swing-arm from levering the bracket off the wall... Matt and I have mounted 50" plasmas on swing arm brackets before with the standard '2 screws in each of 2 seperate studs' method, with no issue or cause for concern.
