Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 27, 2009 3:51 pm Hi, We decided to buy a new system for the Cinema room so we could plan wiring etc during our build. Today we purchased this http://www.sony.com.au/product/ht-ddw7500 to go in here http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab75/andy_min/Cinemaplan.jpg We have our own professional who will run all the cabling for us before plaster but he will need to know where we want everything. So a few questions. Where should we place the 2 sub woofers? together in front centre, front apart or other option? Do the subwoofers need to be on the ground for maximum effect or can we put them in the bottom of the custom cabinet we are building? (concrete floors w/ carpet) How high should the surround speakers be mounted on the wall? All of the other speakers will be in a traditional 7.1 configuration so 1 centre, 2 front, 2 side and 2 rear (slightly apart). Thanks in advance for the advice. The THX website says otherwise though - http://www.thx.com/home/setup/speakers/sub.html Re: Help plan my new Sony Muteki 7.2 set up 3Jan 07, 2010 10:20 am Thanks for your reply. Im still not sure. I was thinking 1 in front centre and 1 in back centre. That would make it easier to fit in the room than on the sides. Your idea is the easiest to set up though, as we can just build the cabinet to fit them in. Keep in mind that they are Mono and non directional (unlike a tweeter) so will really pass around anything and get to you. So really place them anywhere in the room that they are the least intrusive and that will work. The surround speakers would ideally be head high when sitting, pointed at the room occupants if possible. As for the surrounds, they are not supposed to be at head height - they are supposed to be at least 3 feet above head height and at least 1 foot behind you when seated. This goes for all surrounds including speakers '4' and '5' in a 5.1 or 7.1 setup - what some people incorrectly refer to as the 'side surounds'. (Speakers '6' and '7' are the rear surrounds in a 7.1 setup, mounted near or in the middle of the back wall). Re: Help plan my new Sony Muteki 7.2 set up 6Jan 09, 2010 5:58 pm You are right and more experienced than me Rodda, so I stand humbly corrected. My background was in Car Sound so didnt have the luxury of such a blank canvas. Yep what Rodda has said is so true and the only other thing I would suggest is to check if the subs have a phase switch for front or rear room placement. If they don't your subs may be designed to only work from the front of the room only. I know a friend who has this exact system and I'll have a look unless you find out before I do. Although, what the 'phase switch' (sometimes it's a dial too) does is not as straight forward as that - it inverts the sound waves coming from the sub in order to reposition any nodes and antinodes created by those sound waves to try to avoid the seating positions obviously being in either... Re: Help plan my new Sony Muteki 7.2 set up 9Jan 13, 2010 10:20 am this is why i never mess with Phase switch/dial - far to complex for me. But I only have 1 sub but a quality one.. I believe in most HT one quality sub is all that is needed unsless you have a large room then maybe 2 is the go. Subs are far to complex for me to comment on.. though i do truly enjoy reading about them and seeing fancy graphs Re: Help plan my new Sony Muteki 7.2 set up 10Jan 13, 2010 1:05 pm Thanks for all the great advice. My system is currently locked away in my storage shed until the day my house is actually built. Quote: I know a friend who has this exact system and I'll have a look unless you find out before I do. If you get a chance that would be great In the mean time I will see if the website can shed any light for me. I know before we bought it I read something about it self adjusting once your speakers are positioned (excuse my lack of technical terminology) maybe it could also tell if the subs are not at the front. Quote: I believe in most HT one quality sub is all that is needed unsless you have a large room then maybe 2 is the go. I agree, but as the system came with 2 now I just have to figure out where to put them. Its way more powerful than we will ever need but price and usability suited us well. i was not overly impressed with the 80's looking speakers but the sound changed my mind. I don't think I would ever be able to fully crank it without feeling guilty about annoying the neighbour. Lucky they are 5 metres away and not closer.
