Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation Re: What brand of tv do I want? 21Dec 23, 2009 9:50 pm I'm in the same boat and am tossing up between a Panasonic and a Samsung. In Samsung's favour, they offer a plasma that is roughly the same width of the LED Backlits (1.2" compared to 1" IIRC), so that gives you the aesthetics without the price tag (Series 8 Plasmas). You also get a bunch of features like DLNA streaming/youtube - not so important if you have the XBox for that but if it's anything like my XBox, its noisy as hell. The Panasonic has in its favour the competitive pricing and similar, if not better image quality but that'll change depending on which shop you view it. Also, I imagine mounting would be a sinch. I've mounted a few 42" to 60"+ screens that were atleast twice as heavy as these thin screens. They had The Dark Knight running and it was very crisp. You think they'd let me take the Xbox in? Re: What brand of tv do I want? 24Dec 24, 2009 11:49 am Just another 2 cents worth ,,, bear in mind how far you sit from the screen as there is no point having a huge screen if you are using your peripheral vision to view the sides of the picture your mind sees movement rather than detail in the peripheral areas have a great xmas folks eden Re: What brand of tv do I want? 25Dec 24, 2009 1:46 pm Also remember that viewing an LCD/LED television at a store will generally look more impressive than a plasma in a store because of the optimal environment each is designed for. A plasma is in its ideal environment in dark rooms where it can show off its deep blacks, where as an LCD/LED is ideally suited to light rooms. Stores are typically very bright and often the TVs are located directly under flurescent lighting, so that makes trialing LCD vs Plasma at a store even harder. Re: What brand of tv do I want? 26Dec 24, 2009 2:26 pm Personally I would never buy a plasma due to its power consumption alone. But that's me. Leaning towards a Samsung LED at this point. Most likely the 55" model. I've got around a year until I'll need to buy it, so I've got plenty of time to follow price and new models and the like. Even on this little thing the quality was far superior to the others on the market - and reasonably priced. Now to convince the wife we need to 'upsize'. Hopefully it doesn't backfire and she says the 9" is adequate for your movie needs Land Deposit - 18/12/2009 Became a land Baron - 21/12/2010 Site Start - 27/1/2011 All moved in!! Re: What brand of tv do I want? 30Dec 28, 2009 8:21 am About 6 weeks ago I bought a Samsung 55" Series 8 LED and LOVE it!! I was already the owner of a Plasma and traditional LCD, both run in true HD, and the LED is far superior in every way. Nothing compares when it comes to vibrancy and it is awesomely sharp, not to mention thin and of much lower energy consumption. I use my PS3 with it, a media centre and my Mac is plugged into it. It performs flawlessly in all these applications. Highly, highly recommended! Just make sure you have an amplifier for good audio though as the speakers are at the back of the unit as it is intended for wall mounting. As I mentioned at the top, this tv is primarily being used as an Xbox tv so that's music to my ears, thank you Although I'm a little sad that I've missed the free tv offer now...hopefully they'll do another promotion like that during next year as the extra tv would of been great for the bedroom! They seem to be running those bonus gift promotions a lot more now though. I remember when I brought my Bravia, 2 weeks later they started the free ps3 deal. Boy was I annoyed! My mates lcd struggles with a fast moving ball and I see a ghosting effect, something you dont get on plasma. Many moon's ago I married my wife, then the most expensive and sexiest thing I ever invested in. 5yrs ago I purchased a Hitachi 42inch plasma with what was considered an extravagant extra, 2 HDMI inputs. To my eye then it surpassed anything on the market which only proves two things when I was looking. 1. What do you want it to do 2. Do you like what you see when you see it for the first time. Does it give you the wow factor and then compare it to everything else. It's how we go looking to buy a car. Twiggy, you keep edging towards the Samsung so your mind is made up. Use this as your measuring stick for all new models which come out between now and when you go to buy. Oh and a kick arse sound system is very very important and I'm sure Rodda will concur with that. It's what really pulls the viewer in to the 'movie going experience'. Stefan Building the M3tr!con Liberty 42 at Stonecutters Ridge. The New Build Blog - "Life, In Progress."
