Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Nov 04, 2009 11:40 am We're in the process of redeveloping our apartment and I plan to add a surround system in the living room. We are building a false chimney breast for a fireplace we are creating in the centre of the wall which will house an Ecosmart Ethenol Fire Burner and an Panasonic TX32LXD600A HD LCD TV above (may be replaced in the future). To use in-wall speakers built in to the chimney breast 2. Add a "sound bar" below the TV to provide most of the sound and possibly add an in-wall subwoofer - unless I can build the supplied sub into the chimney breast cavity. I know both solutions are a compromise but which is going to be the better option in terms of sound/cost? If sound bar - which models are worth looking at? Re: In wall speakers Vs sound bar for surround system 2Nov 05, 2009 7:41 am Hi mate. Firstly, I reackon you should forget the idea of an in-wall sub. In my experience (I had two of them in the front wall of my theatre at one stage) they are expensive incomparison to a regular stand-alone sub and are not as effective, so with a regular stand-alone sub you get significantly more bang for significantly less buck! Regarding a soundbar vs 5 independent speakers (with either solution there is still an independent sub) I say the only way to get a proper surround sound scape and surround effect is with the 5 (or 7 for that matter) independent speakers. The soundbar simply uses delays and other effects to create the illusion of surround sound. Have you considered using In-ceiling speakers for all 5/7 (again, not including the sub)? Re: In wall speakers Vs sound bar for surround system 3Nov 08, 2009 1:00 pm I have planned to use in-ceiling speakers a distributed audio system but If we put all 5 speakers up there I think it would have a problem insulating the sound from the next-door apartment - we are on the top floor of a 1930s apartment block with a pitched roof space above and there is no barrier between apartments in the roof area.
