Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Oct 29, 2009 7:32 pm In the new house I am building, I am not sure if I will be taking my existing theatre, or buying a new one. My current theatre is high def (only 768, not 1080 but still looks sweet) and everything is run through HDMI. I installed it a few years ago now, and forgotten most of the stuff to look for. Should I pre wire the new house keeping in mind future upgrades I may have - everything from amp, projector and speakers - if I was to sell my theatre with my current home. Has anything changed with regards to amps, cables, etc. Should I just pre wire the theatre room with decent speaker cable and hdmi, and will it make a difference if I re-use my existing theatre set up or buy a new one ? You should run 5 if not 7 speaker wires from where you plan on keeping your AV Receiver to where you will want your speakers to be, and don't forget to run a subwoofer cable (single RCA terminated coax). Also, the subwoofer needs power so make sure there will be a power point near the sub (the sub can go anywhere in the room). Run a HDMI cable from where the AV Receiver will be to where your display device will be (flat panel TV or projector). If the place is single storey then you will be able to change or add things later without too much extra trouble. The features being offered in AV Receivers grows/changes every year so do some research online, whereas speakers don't really change at all... Speaker cable is cheap enough that building in redundancy is worth considering. Speaker cable is cheap enough that building in redundancy is worth considering. I understand the idea of redundancy, but I'm confused as to what benefit 2 runs of speaker cable can have, either for the near or distant future?? (unless you think there's a chance one of your speaker cables will get severed somehow...). Re: What to do with the new theatre 5Oct 31, 2009 1:56 pm Agreed pre wire when can and agreed single story home would not be a Big issue here, in my opinion and thinking of upgrade in future then one set of decent speaker cable is needed.. longer the run of cable thinner the guage of wire in normally used and if you need to splice the cable re connecting two wires for a longer run then the splice is preferred to be in the house and not in the roof.. Re: What to do with the new theatre 6Nov 05, 2009 12:31 pm Thanks for the replies. What size speaker cable should I run ? At the moment, I have some thick speaker cable, but don't know it's size (it was supplied when I bought the speakers). Try Selby's online (I have no affiliation, just used them before and had great products and great service) ... avoid franchise electronics/electrical stores.
