Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Sep 25, 2009 10:48 am Hi there, I am building a 28 sq single storey home. I don't like carpet as my daughter is allergic and am having floating floor all through apart from tiles in wet areas. Was going to get a nice large rug in HT but my 15yo son says we need the carpet due to sound quality? Would also think would look silly as rest of house is floorboards and only small house??? Hubby said could save money also getting carpet inthe one room but am not yet convinced. Thoughts appreciated Re: Home Theatre flooring - please help 2Sep 25, 2009 11:32 am I think your son is right about carpet for sound quality, but I don't think you would need a carpet with a high profile for it to be effective. Give your local carpet store a call and tell them your concerns regarding your daughters allergies and hopefully they can give you some ideas on what would be your best options. Re: Home Theatre flooring - please help 3Sep 25, 2009 1:42 pm When you ugo into a professional cinema, what do you see? My local big Birch cinemas have carpet on the floors and carpet or curtains all over the walls. Why? To avoid echos that add sounds that were not intended by the cinematographer, and improving the realism. Soft furnishings are definitely the way to go. Concerning allergies (and I had masses of them as a teenager, resulting in injections twice a week to build up immunity), keeping carpets and curtains cleaned frequently is the way to go. Frankly I had more problems with timber and tile floors, probably because they do not trap the dust. Carpet shops should have some recommendations. Concerning looking silly: Being practical and having a proper home theatre is more important to me. In any case it's a separate room, so I don't think having different floor material there is going look wrong. Re: Home Theatre flooring - please help 4Sep 25, 2009 2:04 pm Carpet is definately the better option for sound quality. Having said that a large rug in the room as close as possible to your main speakers will do the job just fine. The floating floor boards will bounce the sound a little bit but remember that the plaster on the walls will do the same if there not sound proof. I have floating boards in my HTR (for the same reasons as you). I spend a little bit extra and sound proofed the room and i can tell you that its worth the money. At the end of the day you will not be able to tell the differene unless you go around comparing your HTR to cinemas and proffesional showrooms. Hope that helps Re: Home Theatre flooring - please help 5Sep 25, 2009 4:54 pm my build is going to have floating floor in all rooms downstairs except the toilet and laundry which will be tiled and the HT which will be carpeted. ββQuondo Omni Flunkus Mortati ββ If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
